-- Best Sportsmanship in 2008? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=248524)

Best Sportsmanship in 2008?

I appreciate a good cast of men and dogs.

Who would you like to mention that demonstrated the best sportsmanship during 2008 in a cast that you were on?

I drew out with Jeff Thompson from Ohio at Autumn Oaks. He gets my vote.

I would have to say Adam White while hunting PKC. He is from Harrodsburg, Ky.

Have a great day!

I had some good hunts last year and a few that made me want to quit.
One individual that stands out in my mind is Clay Lautzenhiser of Florida. I drew Clay at the UKC Zone 1 Semifinals in Iowa last year. Although the result of that cast was one of my worst experiences last year, Clay displayed outstanding sportsmanship during the cast. He voted to minus 2 trees that night although his dog was there, later in the hunt when my dog got treed alone Clay was the one to find the coon... giving my dog a 200+ lead over Clay's dog which was the closest dog to me.

Good sportsmanship isn't something that should be noteworthy. Most casts are pretty good. Most folks call they're dogs honestly, play by the rules and take they're minus. That's the norm or at least it should be. Going beyond that, like arguing a point even though it will penalize your own dog, or finding someone else's coon for them, helping someone recover a dog with the hour running and etc. Is now remarkable when so many will call off other dogs, pitch dogs in on a tree, always vote circle, make up rules & etc. Playing the game to win (even it you don't have it coming) seems to be the norm nowadays.

I was honored to be asked to Judge at the UKC World Championship. I could have not asked for better sportsmanship in any one of the casts that I Judged. Thursday Night 1st round, four fine gentleman, not an off word or a voiced raised, cast winner 'PR' Henson's Hardwood Crowbar, he went on to place 11th, Congratulations to Mr. Homer Henson and Handler Mr. Joe Caudill. Thursday Night 2nd round, Judged Ch. Grand Nite Ch. Kenney's Nite Heat Dot, owned by Ronald Kenney and the handler I have forgot his name, but a fine man. The breaks did not go in Dot's favor and she ended up with Zero, the handler shook hands and made a very long trip back to West Virginia. But the most gracious Cast of Sportmanship I have ever witnessed was on the Friday Night Round. The Cast consisted of: Ch. Nite Ch. Logan's The Dirty Rat, Handler, Jay Milner, 10th Place; Gr. Nite Ch. Pec River Kate, Handler, Grant Noeske, 8th Place; Gr. Nite Ch. Smokey Mountain Hannah, Handler, Kenny Mason, 2nd Place. Folks, this cast of handlers is what makes judging a real pleasure, they all took there minus, without a complaint, just as easy as they took there plus points. If anyone out in the Competition World ever has the chance to draw out against any one of these fine handlers, you can bet that you have drawn a real SPORTSMAN. To all you handlers that I had the previlege of Judging, regardless if you won your cast or not, you all made my trip to Northern Illinois truely ENJOYABLE !! Thank you again, Alan Kalal

gosh...that is a very hard one indeed, to pick just one from a list of really great guys i have hunted with over the past year. there are numerous ones indeed, and i thank them all for makeing hunts so pleasurable. I guess there are two that stand out, Tony Flakes, and Dent Wiggins. Both men are sportsman, and both conduct business in the woods as gentlemen. Unless i am mistaken, they both live in the Screven?Burke County areas of GA.
