What where they running? fox, bear, ?

I have never been but I know that foxes run in circles. Normally how big of a circle do they make and do they pretty much stay in the same area?

We had some of our young coondogs "I think" get after one the other night. They got up on top of this ridge and run it in 400-600 yrd circles in about the same area for about 3 or 4 hours. Mine and my buddies dog who normally just open here and there on a coon track where opening every breath as if it was right in front of them. Neither of us know what it was they were running but my suspision is a fox. I could of shocked mine off but sorta enjoyed hearing them all run. We just sit and listnened.

Fox if it was a bear they would have been out of hearing in 10 sec.

My experience with a fox was a grey use to circle once then gone a red twice then gone but that was years ago.Did they hit up on any trees ? just a guess a bobcat

A red will generally line out and can make a bigger circle than a deer. A grey might have you "tapping" trees and from what I understand a yote might run like a rabbit or take off and run like a red. Don't let them run another or they'll get to liken' it.

ok dont take this wrong but if they run it for 3-4 hr you had plenty of time to go see what it was. and if it was me hunting them dogs i would have had a little chat with them on how to line a track out on or around the third lap. i dont blam you for likeing to hear a good track. i like it my self but if i want to see or hear thing go around and around i would have stayed home and wash some clothes. most fox will leave out , bob cat will climb. so will a beer if they are hot on it, a rabit will go in a hole but a dog will chase it's tail for hours.

Never hunted bobcat but my father told me they would circle like a snowshoe rabbit til you moved in on them and then go a section over and do the same again.

It could of been several things.

I have no idea about how a bear runs, but I do know how most red & grey fox, coyotes, & young deer run. As small of a circle as you said that it was running, (400-600 yard circles) I would rule out coyote & red fox. If a grey fox is not pushed hard, sometimes you will think that they are running a coon, because they will work creeks, cross on logs, & even run up a leaning tree & jump off. So your dog will tap tree once in a while. Yes, a grey fox can & do climb trees.

A young deer or a doe with a new born, will circle not wanting to leave it's home territory, unless really pushed hard.

My guess is that they were running a young deer or a grey fox.

All of these animals mentioned above have a home territory & a coyote & deer have the largest territory, But the coyote will either run or kill the fox out of it's territory. A red fox will do the same to a grey fox. Here we have red fox denning & feeding in town, but you won't see them out in the strip hills where the coyotes are at.

A grey will circle in a half mile. Red will circle a little wider. Coyote may leave out or circle in two or three sections. Don't know about a bear. Hounds really pushing a bob cat will make it climb in a half mile or so. The cat may bale out and run after catching it's breath but will take anouther tree.

They really have to push a grey fox to get it to climb but I have seen it.

To the guy that was talking about since they run it for three or four hours why didnt I go check it out Im not offended at all. The fact is that I was standing at about 2300 ft and they were running this thing at the hightest peak we have around at about 4400 ft and they were 1.75 miles away and in thick laurel. I guess i got a lazy streak. What ever it was they sure where having a good time and didnt half mind hearing them run it.
