Try and find loyal made by purina they have a 26 /18 .I have fed pro plan and Loyal is better and cheaper. Loyal is made by NUTRENA

scott......the purina hi pro.....is actually 27/15......i hear it's pretty good stuff but I have never used it. I feed pro plan to one dog and she does great on it. it's the weight management.......the price hurt until I realized that when I feed the "recommended" amount on the bag. Of course I only use it from early spring until about november.....but I found that one bag....38# would last me 8 weeks with her. I go to pet smart and usually have a coupon or they always have it on special for $5 off....so I get it for $32.......it last for 8 weeks.....which means I am actually only paying $16 a bag for it......not bad. and it keeps the dog from getting overweight.

Been using Hi-Pro on the girls that tend to get a little on the fat side, and they look real good. My male dog that tends to be on the thin side eats Pro-Plan and it works great on him. I've also been using some of the Purina Vet Diets and its working GREAT!!! It is VERY expensive though, $69.00 for 35lbs.

Scott,
The"little" Pup of mine that Daniel is hunting has been on Purina Hi-Pro every since he came off of Puppy Chow. The Wipe-out pup of Daniels that I have has picked up weight since she came to the house. That's what see is on now.

I just started feeding Purina Hi Pro a few weeks ago but the dogs seem to be doing well on it. I'll know more later on in the season. I have to travel too far to get Black Gold which is my preferred feed. They always excelled on it.

If you save your wieght circles at 7000 pts. you get ten rebate checks at 7$ per bag. This can be used with a coupon because it is a rebate check. So if you have a coupon for 5$ with the rebate check it is12$ off a bag! Just call the # on the bag to join the pro-club. I also get a free bag of 37.5lbs. for every 10 bags I buy at petco. I buy it on sale and use checks when I have them, still expensive but is a quality feed and I use less.

Try PurinaOne Lamb & Rice 26/18. Great food, costs less than Pro Plan.

pro plan

is really a great food. i quit feeding it because of price only. switched to black gold. havent been feeding b/g long so dont know how well i will like it yet.
i fed the pro plan performance and adult chicken and rice. the new shredded blend is a little different than the original chicken and rice. purina sent a notice out that they would be bringing back the original chicken and rice due to the over whelming calls and letters requesting it be offered again.

Talking about Pro Plan, im on a rampage with Purina as we all have had to do with most brand of dog feeds. Love the pro plan original formula as dual walkers stated it keeps the hounds in great shape. Pro Plan Shredded is currently on the market, it is not the feed that the original plan was. Price goes up, poundage goes down and quality lacks. Still better than the other feeds but not quite the same.
Purina wrote me and said the original was coming back due to popular demand and sent me a few coupons. I went yesterday and tried to get the Performance blend and was out of stock, that told the story that folks arent happy with the Shredded. Write Purina, tell them to get off their high chair. Tell them they need to drop prices and get the Pro Plan back on the shelves.

Those of you that feed Purina is there a big diference in the Performance blend vs Pro Plan beef, chicken or lamb?

When you guys say you do not feed as much, what are we talking ? I have three hounds at the house. One is an easy keeper and gest by on 2 cups a day, maybe three in the winter. One, gets 4 cups a day and stays the same all year round. My male gets about 2 cups spring, summer and fall, but 4 in the winter. Will I cut my feed bill in 1/2? As long as I do not over feed, the stools look good. How much will I cut down on? I have been thinking about switching, but am kind of tight with the pocket book. When you look at the feeding guide lines they are the same on the dog chow bag as they are on the pro-plan. There is no doubt that the Pro Plan is better feed. Just curious, thanks.

I only feed 1 cup Pro Plan (Shredded Blend) Adult to my dogs. They are hunted at night and I run them about 5-6 miles a day. They are all fat and in very good shape, great muscle tone and there hair looks great even now that its winter. I have always feed Pro Plan Performance but I love the Shredded Blend... I just feed according to the bag. Some alittle more or less. The 1 cup works right now for me..

If your feeding one cup a day to your dogs your not feeding to the bags recomendations. My shredded bags call for 51-75 lb dog at 31/4 - 41/4 cups a day for non active dogs in ideal weather conditions. Running 5-6 miles a day and hunting at nite with one cup a day really confuses me. I hunt 3-6 nites a week, hunt 1-6 miles a hunt and I feed about 3 cups both morning and nite to the active dog. Are you sure your only feeding one cup a day?

I even looked at the high dollar (higher than pro plan) pure natural feeds yesterday at the store and they called for 4-5 cups a day with their feeds.

When I sent my two females out to be bench trained, the guy was feeding them Pro Plan and they looked great. He gave me a Pro-Plan feeding cup that holds 2 cups of the food when I went to pick up my red dog, and that's what I feed her. He fed her 2 cups (which is actually one full Pro-Plan cup) the whole month she was there and she didn't come back looking too skinny. I'll definitely keep feeding my coonhounds Pro-Plan, but I'm just not springing for it for the deer dogs.

Posted by Scott S. on 12-17-2008 05:40 PM:

This confuses me by saying you all feed less with the Pro Plan. I do not feed my active dogs six cups a day of the cheaper feed and they have plenty of energy and look good.

If I can get by with feeding the hard keeper two cups instead of four, the easy keeper 1 cup instead of two and my other hound 1 cup in the spring, summer, and fall, and 2 in the winter then I might switch.

Posted by Scott S. on 12-17-2008 05:45 PM:

SCBluetickGal, how much did you feed before you started feeding the pro-plan? Thanks, Scott

Posted by jackback on 12-17-2008 05:52 PM:

I do have to say that I like Pro Plan. But I honestly cant see a whole of difference between it and Hi Pro other than the amount of stool. I'm going to continue feeding Hi Pro.

Posted by Scott S. on 12-17-2008 06:02 PM:

I fed Sam's Member Mark Exceed before the prices started going up. It was good feed, and I have heard it is purina one. The hounds did great on it and it is 26.00 for 44 pounds.

Not the best, but better then Pro Plan and Purina prices.

Posted by Lee Stocking on 12-17-2008 06:21 PM:

Scott hang on. I'll round up some information for you. Im not over feeding but I may have my measurements wrong regarding dry dog feed. I do feed twice a day and have to double any feed during the winter months. I'll get back with you.

Lee, I think you are probably on the money with the recommendations.

Posted by Lee Stocking on 12-17-2008 06:45 PM:

Yep just as I thought, im giving out false information. (sorry guys) What I am feeding is Pro Plans Shredded Lamb n Rice. I feed 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups at nite. 4 cups total a day in the cold and hunting a dog 3-6 nites a week. What I have noticed about Pro Plan is this. My dog is thin around the waist with a very small amount of ribs showing. Hip, or back bones show zero sign of being under weight. Muscle tone is excellent. Dog hunts all nite everynite and more energy to go. Still the best dog feed I have ever fed although I like the original pro plan better, cost less and more lbs in the bag. Below is a picture while hunting 7 nites a row so you can see for yourself.
I take advantage of the Pro Club using every cupon they give me and it lowers my cost to about $25 (give or take) a bag. im also raising pups on it, doing a very nice job. Thanks guys this is good information.
