-- Snares, too many coon! (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=243934)
Snares, too many coon!
I have no problem with traping, but I think snares are killin to many coon! In my section at least 5 people snareing coon! I think thats too many! These people think there makin money?
them four dollar coons really add up if you catch 3000. wonder how many dogs they got!
Fur buyers send the message at the start of fur season- coon worth 20 bucks, two weeks later, 5.00. That brings out every snare setter, spotliter ect.!
I know 3 snare setters that have got 300 coon in a couple weeks. Thank god one of them moved away 3 years ago but he got a local kid doing it to. I guess it's more about the sport for me.
snares
Just remember snares or other traps when set properly ARE LEGAL. SHOOTING COONS out of season to train your old dogs is B.S. AND ILLEGAL . ALSO BEATING your dog 2 the tree with your spottlight is ILLEGAL also. REMEMBER every sow coon you shoot down in may, june is also killing the kit coons back in the den tree. ALSO STEALING TRAPS OR SNARES IS ALSO ILLEGAL . OH BY THE WAY I USED TO BE THE ONLY PERSON YEARS AGO WITH PERMISSION to hunt YOUR favorite hunting ground . I had 3 coonhunters that also trap call me about your coments blaming trappers 4 low coon population. The coon are still there you just have 2 get out of that dark blue exstended cab ford and turn the dogs loose and turn off your light till their treed. I hope this straightens out a few things before next season gets here.
old buck
You don't need to worry about including me in your young kid spot lighting comments. I put time into my hounds and don't shoot coon out of season. It's one thing to hammer out 3 or 4 hundred snares or conibears to run out and kill everything in there path.
You couldn't imagine putting 12 months a year into young dogs, working with them, watching them turn into good coondogs that you only turn your light on to walk to, to end up at the tree. I like to walk past a coon in a tree because my dog is on another track to another tree. Something else to run next time. I know them snarers would shoot one off a fence post if it was worth a buck and 199.9 yards from a house.
Hey, old buck, I hate it when people bash other people on the computer. So Im not going to stoop that low! But since you think im a thief, come on out and find other peoples traps on my property! Ive shot maby 20 coon this year IF I were spotliting That number would be a lot Higher dont you think? And anyone who thinks I beat my dogs does not know me very well! And bashing people you dont know well is not wise! As far as getting out of my pickup, I hunt 4 ot 5 nites a week, in the summer, try to hunt 7. All Im saying is 5 people trapping one road is a little much! So if you have a problem say it to me not everyone on this site. Have a nice day!
In response to some of the comments made ... first off I don't think anyone is blaming the trappers for low coon prices, what was said is that when certain buyers stated early on that hides were going to be worth $20, it brought out a lot more trappers and along with that it brings out more hunters also, so I don't think there is no one person actually being blamed. As for accusing someone of illegal hunting and shooting coon out of season to train their dogs...well unless you have been with them it is all hear say and if you were with them to have the proof then you are just as guilty, I also know you, old buck, have had a lot of good competition coondogs, are you going to tell me that while training young dogs or conditioning your older dogs that they have never gotten a coon during off season? Now I am not going to do what has been done and accuse anyone of shooting out of season, dogs do catch coon off guard, like on the ground!! And of all things, people think bad enough of coonhunters I don't think we need to make it worse by putting negative comments on the message board. But now here is a comment that will upset some trappers, I personally do not like snares, not because of how many are in use but because there have been a lot of good hounds lost to a snare trap, by the time you get to your hound that is caught in a snare trap it is usually too late, and often times it is too late for the neighbor kids favorite cat or family dog that ran into a snare also...at least with a foothold they would still be alive, might be minus a foot or something but chances of them living is a lot greater! Now back to the person whom started this thread, not everyone is perfect, but I know for a fact that he does get out of his truck and his dogs, one imparticular had his own recliner in front of the woodburner in the shop, which shows he likes his hounds. I hope I didn't offend anyone and I don't think that anyone making comments on this thread hasn't done what anyone else has done. Lets all try and get along...and have a Merry Christmas!!

One thing I am not against is trapping, I too used to enjoy the sport. But I do not, and never will use snares! But to those who do, it is your right. And I am not crying about anything, only stating the fact that too many people snaring in one area is not good for a future coon population, I have 2 young kids and hope when there old enuf to hunt they have a healthy pop. of coon.
What gets my blood boiling is when someone that does not know you stomps on your creditability as a hunter. Ive passed up a lot of coon over the years because my dog did not tree it!
if i
find a coon sitting up i will never kill it and i onley kill 1 out of a tree and that is onley as they are needed shoot to my dogs.foot hold traps catch as maney coon as snares yet i think more coon are cought in foot hold traps.i love to trap but i do wish no snares could be sit on dry ground.helps to protect dogs foot hold traps do not kill your dogs or mine and trapers has the same rite as us coon hunters.better stick togeather to make us stronger aginst the antis

Dogboy, I agree with ya, but you can set a lot more snares in one day than foot holds, and theres no limit on the no. you set in one area.
I don't think stealing traps is what this post was about, I believe it was about snares and how some people don't care for them, and for those of you that take a chance and your dog gets in a snare and gets choked to death you must not think much of your dog if you are just going to turn around and give it back to the person it belongs to ...I'd give it back alright!! ...I am sorry I am all for the trapper, I have family members that trap, but I am against snares, too many people do not use sense when setting them. And for some of those that set traps where they are not suppose to be, would you just rather they disappeared or that the DNR was standing at your door? Trappers and coonhunters alike are not perfect, but I like to think there a more good trappers and coonhunters than there are bad ones!
Sammy,well put!
sorry
I didn't meen 2 point finger at you marv I WAS trying 2 cover a broad area and might of come on a little strong.
i
