whose smarter: me or my dog?

I'm not sure whose learning more about coon hunting this year? Me or my Dog? I've learned that it's better not to hunt young dogs on bad nights? I've also learned that windy, full moon, freezing nights are just about pointless to hunt unless you've got Sacket Jr. or Merks Singing Tapp on the end of your lead.

Most of my dogs problems are my fault for taking him when I should have stayed home. I've learned my dogs instincts are greater than my passion to hunt. He knows when to hunt and when to stay in the box even if I try to dump him out three times.

Young dogs need hunted hard on good nights for a longer period of time. Rather than hunting him several bad nights in a row.

I've learned to choose my hunting partners wisely. There is nothing more frustrating than waiting around on someone elses poor handling dog while waiting to hunt your own. Also, is it me, or do a lot of coon hunters lie. I have a coon hunting buddy that lies to me just about every day. He says he'll show up at 8, but it's more like 9. He says he'll help me do this or that and never shows and never calls. When I call to see if he's coming he ignores my calls. Ever have a friend like this? Doesn't sound like much of a friend; more a convience thing; I'll keep you around so your good dog can train my worthless pups. This is what I feel like sometimes.

I've also learned that buying a pup from a good stud dog and a brood female is not a good idea. The mother of a pup means just as much as the father if not more. Buying a pup from two great parents is a gamble let along buying one from a good dad and poor mother. The odds are stacked against one who ignores this advice. Breed coondogs to coondogs to get coondogs. Duh!!

I'd write a book; but John Wick already wrote two. Share some stories of what you've learned this year.

Sounds like you are well on your way to becoming a GOOD coonhunter. Takes some folks years to learn what you have and some never will.LOL

I've never owned a dog, or at least not very long, that stayed in the box when I wanted to dump out. If they're hurt or something that might be different. I don't care what kind of weather condition, when the tailgate drops and doors open, it's time to get with it.

treed twice tonight

tonight was a better night. Jim struck right from the tail gate, ran a quarter mile and treed a great big one. Then he came back in for a second drop in the opposite direction and treed another.

Sometimes its better to work smart than work hard.

The secret is to try to learn from mistakes.

It sounds like you are doing well.

found a good quote

one wise old hunter said,

"We don't take out coondogs hunting; they take us!" I agree.

Think about how true this statement really is.
