Being surrounded by them I'm almost surprised you ask, Tiff! Year in and year out the hunts in our area , generally, have a "Lone Pine/Wild" dog in the tight winning circles. Lee, Larry (God rest his soul), Tony, Randy S., Dale, Skinny, Craig, Terry, Les, and a host of others have put dogs in the winner's circle with Lone Pine bred dogs. Sure, they're like any other line of dogs. They have had their clunkers, but, for the most part Blaine MaGill, Lee Logan, Harold Freed and others have helped in the line of dogs surrounding our area. The strong points I have found are that they take their tracks as they come. They are "all year" type of hounds that will go as far as it takes to get the job done. For the most part they have good mouths on them. They don't generally diddle dally around on a track and are tree dogs. My Cal dog is as Lone Pine as you can get. I've treed and seen coon at 4 degrees, 8 degrees, and in all types of conditions. On the other side, some of them (males and females) can be a little cantankerous on the tree. Some of the females have been known to have irregular heat cycles and now and then you get a silent or tight mouth hound. All in all they have proven themselves year in and year out for the past several decades.

I'm far from an expert... but from what I've gathered Lone Pine dogs are basically Finley River dogs. When lots of folks with Finley River dogs started breeding show dog stuff in the Lone Pine dogs seemed to stay true to form. Most dogs labeled Finley River have had show stock mixed in. Not that it is neccessarily a bad thing, its just a bit different then the old Finley River blood. When people describe the old Finley River dogs, I think the Lone Pine dogs would fit the bill more so than any other line. Most Lone Pine dogs also show a shot of Logan's Wild Clover, who was also Finley River bred.
PA seems to be overrun with Lone Pine dogs. There are a handful of breeders there all producing Lone Pine dogs, although each breeder breeds a little differently.

That is about as good a description as it gets. Balanced track and tree hounds in any conditions.

I don't know much beyond Hall of Fame Lone Pine Jill, but, I know she was bred to Finley River Dan back in the 70's and produced a ton of top rate hounds. One of the best hounds I have owned was a double Finley River Dan and Lone Pine Jill female. Over the years Lee has had good luck with several outcrosses. Lee and I have talked that the Finley River cross made fantastic track dogs and has kind of been overlooked in the last several years as far as bringing the type of track dog that made every track sound like they were running a deer.......

the gentleman I am most interested in is Blain Magill. If anyone can let me know about him I would appriciate it.

I am looking into how the lone pine breeding came about. i know from Duvall but I want to know also how it came to be what it is today. I know that Blain went and picked up pups of or Mr. Duvall. And that most of the guys such as Lee Logan and Tom Strang got into the lone pine breeding from Blain's dogs.

Duvalls Lone Pine Lady was the first.

She was bred to Finley River Spike and Finley River Pete.

Lone Pine Dogs

Tiffany

I kinda got away from the Lone Pine dogs years ago but I’ve owned and hunted with a bunch of them. I live in Maryland just below the PA line and that’s all that was here years ago. Stanley Duvall who owned Lone Pine Lady lived not far from me. Stanley attended many of the local hunts in Md. and PA. he was always smiling and laughing and just enjoying the fellowship of his many friends. Stanley Duvall, Donald Warfield and Gene Harrison really started the Lone Pine breed by breeding Stanley’s Lady who was the first dog to carry the Lone Pine name to Finley River Spike and Finley River Pete. Lone Pine Eagle was one of the pups from one of those crosses. A very well known dog off Lone Pine Eagle was a dog know to the local people as Little Eagle owned by Sterling (Shots) Smith from Maryland. Wolfe’s Tree Picking Bill was another pup off Lone Pine Lady. I’m pretty sure Bill won the Grand American in 1975 he was owned by Billy Wolfe from Maryland. Johnny Lyles from Maryland also owned some nice Lone Pine hounds. Denny Burns from Chambersburg, PA had some nice Lone Pine dogs back in the late 70s early 80s. Overall the Lone pine dogs I’ve seen in the woods were real nice hounds. They hunted good could handle a track were quick and accurate tree dogs had fair mouths and would stay treed. If you could get in touch with Denny Burns, Shots Smith, Johnny Lyles or Billy Wolfe you could get a ton of information on the older Lone Pine dogs. Send me a PM and I’ll try to round up their phone numbers for ya.

when butch owned a dog named high country's night heat was about the time that the lone pine dogs came about. my uncle had a dog named lone pine patches and she was a go getter. i think she came from a cross of night heat blood and lone pine blood but it could have been a sakett jr. cross. all i know is he said the night heat and lone pine breeding was going to change the walker breed and im pretty sure it did. lee logan has done a fine job continueing the blood and walker people should be proud of their older stock. im an english guy but have hunted with some great walkers. one's name is lone pine chase. he is 9 now and one of the most accurite dogs i have seen go.

Lone Pine Patches was a Lone Pine cross. I can't remember the exact cross, but, she was related to Lone Pine Buddy, and had Julie and Jill in there. I believe Hardwood Bozo was in the mix, but, don't quote me. Lone Pine Jill had Blaine MaGill's name on her because Blaine finished her to bench champion, I believe. Lee Logan and Ted Varshine bought her and finished her in the nite hunts. Check with Rick Freed on Tall Oaks Spot. Sackett descended from the Nite Heat and Patches cross.
