Brandon,
I'm a former Guard member. If you're not comfortable with the thought of active duty, don't do it. If you are, Go For it!
I went to bootcamp @ Ft Benning GA in '97 right after high school. It was the best thing I ever did. Being in the Guard after that was a whole 'nother story.

You could get shot or killed.

I think it would be a great idea. Did 4 years real army then did a little Gaurd time after getting out. Something a man can look back on and be proud of.

Brandon i have a son in the Army National Gaurd....best thing for a young man...wish my dad would have let me do when i was 17.Gives you confidence in yourself, gives you the chance for all the schooling you could ask for, gives you a monthly check you can depend on and if you stay in long enough it gives you a nice retirement and insurance....i say go for it!!! I could tell a big difference in my boy...if you do go over seas you'll be digging ditches and biulding bridges, the danger of being shot is always there, but these days thats possible in your own back yard!!

Nothing better than a good coonhunter defending our country!!!

Spent 4 years on active duty in the early 70's. Got out for a few years. My job fell through before I could vest a pension. (Teamster truck driver.) Joined the USAF Reserve and got to travel to the world. Retired in 2005 after almost 2 year activation from Sept '01 to the end of June '03. My only regret is the break in service after my initial active duty. I should have went straight to the Reserves. I was paid well for a "part-time job" and looking at approx $1,200. a month when I hit 60 years of age. I had 3 weeks of military time on my civilian job as a deputy sheriff that I got with the help of my experience in the USAF Security Police (now Security Forces). During that time I would "double dip." Paid by both the USAFR and the S.O. I would take vacation for some of my "adventures" and double dip some more. Would I do it again.......don't even ask......AIR FORCE, AIR POWER!!!!!!!!!!!

I spent twenty years in the U.S Marine Corps, and there are days I wished I would have stayed for thirty. I went enlisted in 86 right after high school and it was the best thing I ever did. I was in both Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, matter a fact I was close to being in the same spot both times. I served under both Bush's and I'll leave it at that. One was quite more knowledgable then the other, and did a better job as Commander and Chief, I am sure you can figure it out on your own.

In my observations they are using more guardsmen and reservist this time, so if you are not 100% dedicated to being deployed then rethink it. If there is one think that irritated me, it was resevists complaining about getting sent over in both wars. "They joined for the college benefits, they never thought they would actually go somewhere". Then they wonder where negative labels like "Weekend Warriors" come from??? Don't get me wrong I have served along side every branch both active duty and reservist and they all have awesome people serving who are dedicated and I would serve with them again in a heartbeat.

Former member. WISH I'd went Air Force insted. Better schooling. Army guard was a joke. I knew more than some of my sargents did. I was a 63 bravo. wheeled vehicle mechanic.
I had a blast in basic training. If they ask for "volunteers" get your hand up. You may get stuck doing KP once in a while, but there are times it was a last. One time I got to ride out in the back of a duece to firing range. While I'm riding out, we go buy my comp. They were walking the five miles out to it. LMAO I had to load rounds for them while thet were walking. Afterwards I stayed after and policed brass and got a ride back just in time for lunch.
Now after I got out and started going to my guard unit. Completely different.

Done with basic training and getting shipped out for my AIT

Army

I would love to join the Army. However evreything i would like to do is closed to women, i may join still if i find an area i would like. It makes me very angry when i am researching a job in the Army, read all about it, and decide it would be perfect, then realize I cant do it because i am a girl.

I am a retired Army Guardsman, spent 19 years in the Guard, after doing two years active duty in the Army, and four years ROTC in college. There are pros and cons to anything. One thing about being a Guardsman or Reservist is the foolish notion that you only have to spend "one weekend a month and two weeks during the summer". During peacetime, you are constantly also going to some sort of military school, and extra training weekends, etc. I had upwards of 50% of my weekends doing somethings with the Guard. Now, during war time, you will more than likely be serving overseas tours in Iraq and Afganistan. I have no regrets about having been in the military, and would do it again all over again. A lot depends on what your spousal situation and kids situation is. If you want to, go and join, but you will be gone from home a lot.

I spent 2 years plus at Ft Sill. Was combat Engineer. Back then (83 84) they had a club there, Lawton Ft. Sill coonhunters club. We had several good hunts down there. Made many many friends hunting down there.
