box trap bait for COONS....?

I am wondering what ya'll use to trap a coon or two in a box trap. I've used various things over the years, but usually go 2 to 1 possums over coons. I am looking to rid a buddy of mine's barn from coons and not necessarily catch cats, possums, skunks, etc.....

In the past a good ole honey bun worked great. but lately they have been getting the honey bun without setting the trap off.

Trap location is more important than bait used. With that said I prefer large marshmellows with a drop or two of vanilla.

Vanilla is just in case our location isn't as good as you think, and it helps with olfactory senses. The large white marshmellows are good for two reasons. #1 visible attaction. #2 I tear 1 marshmellow up into little dime sized pieces to lead a trail into the trap. The little pieces are sticky and coons absolutely love to roll them in their paws. Another plus is the marshmellows tickle the coons sweet tooth.

Thanks Guys,

I would say I am leaning towards the Marshamallow/Vanilla combo. Cheap, easy, and not overly offensive to haul away with caught coon.

been havin a hard time catchin coon as well......might just fix the trap open fora bit,,,bait it with the marshmellows and mexican Vanilla........lots more alcohol in it........... maybe the coon will pass the word free alcohol at the big oak down front........... then set the trap to catch!

As the weather gets colder try setting in barns or near den trees. This may help if coons aren't moving much due to the colder weather.

I've been thinking about using a white golf ball and a pack of grape kool-aide, but the marshmellows and vanilla might be more worth the try.

i use peanut butter and a raw egg, Have had no problem catching coons. the egg is the key to catching those trap savy coons. the have to fidget with the egg there for setting off the trap.

glazed donuts are my personal choice. The honey bun is great. In my experience the sweeter the bait the less trouble I have with catching non target game.

Geeez you guys might find my head stuck in a few of your traps with all that good stuff

Posted by bluetickjake on 12-04-2008 04:14 PM:

little debey pecan rolls

get them and poke holes in a coke can and wire it to the top of the trap near the back, then stuff it with the pecan rolls the coons will get in there and while they are tryin to get the pecan rolls out of the can theyll step on the trip. best way to do it yet, and also yes trap location is important if you want to keep the possums out of it.

coon bait

I released 111 coons at my house this year I caught. I use Friskies salmon flavored pink label. Dollar store has it. I catch a possum every now and then. When you set it just barely crack the lid on the can. It makes then have to work a lttle.

Re: box trap bait for COONS....?

we use hunny buns, and just plain pancake surip. that will catch a coon.

WE RAN OUT OF HONEY BUNS ONE TIME AND I PUT SOME PANCAKE SYRUP ON A PAPER PLATE. HAD ONE IN 2 HOURS.

I THINK THE THING IS SOMETHING THAT KEEPS THEM BUSY ENOUGH TO TRIP THE TRAP IS THE TRICK. THEY ARENT DUMB CRITTERS THATS FOR SURE.

Everytime I put Sardines in I catch a possum. If I set 4 traps here with Sardines when I go check them 3 out of 4 would have a possum.
