Judging - question on splits...

I've heard...over the years as the saying goes "The Judge is the only person that can call a split".

Someone else hear any different?

Not saying noone else can, but that it isn't a legitimate "Split" until the Judge calls the split...

It is not a split until judge declares a split track.

nothing good happens from split tracks. Yes, in all cases, the rules set aside from UKC allow for fair scoring, if used, and judged correctly. But with splits, its hard enough for judges, to be consistent with the stop watch, let alone having two of them going at once. In most cases, the terrain, and layout of most running areas don't allow for ease of scoring. With the use of hunting judges, its almost immpossible for them to be judged fair and correct. Ex. dog a splits from b, c, and d, ok, the judges dog is c. The judge should stay with what he feels is the original track, if cant be decided on, he stays in the middle of the two. Well, that's where the problems occur, depending on the direction of the tracks, and the terrain, you will be separtating the casts. Its hard to have a majority for seeing, or scoring the rabbits in these situations. Makes it very easy for the judge not to get to dog a, when a line is to be scored, also if dog a's rabbit is not seen, and then goes down, you would now have a majority of the cast to out vote him on a hole. Then possibly, you would have dog a minused his strike points for not scoring on speed and drive, (which in my book is a whole other story.) So overall, I've heard more bad, than good when it comes to split tracks. If a bunch of you out there disagree, and think there good, and like running around all crazylike, trying to score, then these should be some of the one's that should get their pp license's and judge themselves.....
