New To The Game

I AM NEW TO THE COON DOG WORLD. I NEED ANYONES ADVISE I HAVE A 6 MONTH OLD PUP WHO TEARS UP THE ROLLER CAGE. I CAN ALSO HANG THE CAGE IN THE WOODS AND TREES IT FAIRLY QUICK. WHEN SHOULD I RELEASE THE COON LET HIM TREE IT AND SHOOT IT OUT. THANKS AK

Anytime. If it shows interest I would turn the coon and let the pup watch it run off. (in an open field) wait a few minutes then turn the pup. I have used this method alot.

I train most of mine in the wild since caged coon are hard to come by...but ill say this leave your young dog always wanting more. If you have a buddy with a "good" old dog thats not ill you will probably want to hunt it with it till its very well started then put it alone so it doesnt become a "me too" dog.

If your dogs running and treeing the caged coon by smell instead of sight then its safe to turn it out about anytime over the next month I would say. I dont know how others do it but I try to shoot the coon dead to your young dog. I wouldnt recommend letting it get in a bad fight with a coon at that age.

Ive messed with hunting dogs all my life and coon dogs involve more time and work than any dog that i know to train. Sounds like your dogs got a good start. Just dont overdo it with caged coon as hunting in the wild will be totally different for your dog.

I HAVE BEEN TAKING THE CAGE TO THE WOODS ROLLING IT TO A TREE AND HANGING IT UP GO BACK TO THE KENNELS AND LETTING THE PUP GO. HE PICKS UP THE SCENT AND TREES

You should stop with the cage and anything visual. You will make him have to see the coon before he will tree. Also, rolling that coon from tree to tree and that pup seeing this is enough to ruin him already. Do not mess with him on a caged coon anymore. Good luck.

When he's ready take him to a open field and tie him off,bring u a coffee jug of really warm water,put the coon half way towards the woods from the dog,pour that water on him to bring out his natural scent plus it will leave a good track this way,turn him loose and then wait about 5 min and turn your dog loose,dnt walk him to the spot were u turn out(the coon)let him run across it himself and when he trees it shoot it out"D.A.H" and then just mess wit him wit it,u dnt want that pup getting a whippin from Rickey.

I would stop with the cage coon, you said, youve taken the pup back to the kennel, and he goes back and trees? Wait till dark turn the coon loose, go get the pup if he trees it shoot it out. also would help to hunt some with an older dog.

I'm fairly new to the coonhunting game, but I did see a pup get wipped up on after a coon was let go in a field, it ran down in the woods, but did not tree, It apparently just hunkered down in some briars and when that young dog came running down through, the pup got a good wippin. Whats yalls thoughts on this?

If the pup fought back thats good! Sometimes a butt kickin is all it takes for a pup to turn it on!

need to fight some coon when they are young.it builds there hate drive for coon.if i was 20 years younger i would shake them out to pups alive,,get ride of that roll cage you will get your dog treeing by site instead of smell and it will just track you to the tree.turn the coon lose if it trees it shoot it out
