Coyote Trapping
I'm a first time trapper and we have loads of coyotes in this area. It's getting to the point where its rediculios. What is an easy way to trap coyotes?
Dirt hole set is a popular way.
A mehtod I've used in the past with good results is similar. Save all your bacon grease in the fridge. Find yourself a nice tree, of good size...preferably one with a concave face. Place sticks or cut bows on either side to kinda make a funnel into the side of the tree. Smear some bacon grease on the bark of the tree about 4" from the ground, and set 1 or 2 legholds inside the funnel so when the yote comes to lick the grease, they'll step on a trap. Be careful with scent, and dont use this set where a hound or yard dog can get into it cuz they will too. I never used stakes with yote, just 2 prong drage on a 4 foot chain. You can use the bows to cover your drag hook..they never make it very far away...10 feet or so depending on brush. Good luck, and be careful of mange.

Typically, there isn't much that is easy about trapping coyotes. Three main sets used for coyotes are the dirt hole (as mentioned), the uriine post, and the flat set.
Coyote trapping right takes work. You need traps. Many brands need to be modified to work well for coyotes. The traps need to be properly handled such as rusting, dyeing, and waxing. Then you need to worry about scent.
A good place to learn about coyote trapping would be trapperman.com Check out the archives.

best thing to use is a dirthole set with a #3 duke. u can catch them in a 1 3/4 but it is harder. my advise is dirg a hole about 6 inches deep and put something similar to the location sith some steppinwolfe I, or coyote gland lure 100, or even some wiley red 500 or some widowmaker. i perfer grey fox or beaver for coyotes. bring your center of the pan back from the lip about 8 inches.

I always used the same set (dirt hole), same bait, lures, urine that I used for fox. Never had much trouble catching them, had real trouble holding them till I went to bigger equipment. Double crossed stakes MB600's or #3Bridger, 4coiled, base plated and laminated. Coyotes destroyed my #2 Victor coil springs. That is my experience with 'yotes. Caught 14 the last year I trapped them and after skinning that 14th 'yote, I decided no more 'yotes for me.
