House dog hounds

Has anybody ever had hounds that live inside their house that still hunted?

My weiner dogs hunts food, does this count!

Yes Dave he is a hard hunter. It doesnt hurt a hound at all. When its dark and we go outside he will run to my truck. When we get home I just unsnap him from the box and he will go inside his kennel. When my little female was still alive I could trust her and left her out of the air crate and she would sleep on the couch.

our male English lives in the house most of the time, sometimes he lives in "grandma's" back yard lol, but at the present time his "kids" aka puppies have the yard so he is a "house dog" now.
We got him at a little over a year (show and hunt bred) he had only ever seen a caged coon. He lived in our house for just shy of a year, we only showed him 2 cage coons in that time. Several months after that he went on his first hunt. he struck first and Had a coon in the tree in less than 10 mins. And that aint in exceptionally thck coon either. and he was dropped with another seasoned dog but he treed while the other dog back tracked and doubted himself.

They know thier job, its bred into them. well most of them LOL

My BlueDawg

He's been retired since we got him but he was a house dawg coondog for his previous owner. Great pet(a bit too loud for a normal person...and too smart I suppose)... but he was hunted hard for a couple of years before his owner had to give him up.

Our Entire Kennel of 14 Hounds are all "House Hounds" All are hunted Hard and we have a rotation of who is hunted .. We also have 4 Pups from this years Breedings being added to the Pack.

If they happen into a Skunk or something Ripe then they spend some time in the Kennels.

Golly, I like the looks of your majestic hounds. To big for my house but if I had room for them I would be looking at getting one. We have a 65 lb bluetick who lives in the house. She goes out on her tie out whenever she can but sleeps on a dog bed in the living room. Like Bigcastle Heather said, smarts is our biggest problem with keeping her inside. She needs a bit more checking on when things are just to quiet, if you know what I mean. Usually she is napping but sometimes she is sitting on our wingback chair. I can catch her at it by using a couple of glass reflections that line up from a china hutch to the living room windows. I give a grunt....'git down' and she slinks in like she is sad. We hunt her but I won't brag her up on coons. She has put a few up but we aren't serious hunters the way a lot of you folks are. Just dabblers mostly.

Furniture...

...LOL.. willseeyalater... we had retired racing greyhounds and one was a housedog before he came here and wasn't RUINED like ours and allowed on the sofa etc... he had that "look" down perfectly...
Ours sleep on the bed here and on the furniture etc... if we hunted ours there would have to be some limits to the filth.. if they came home gross they'd not be on the furniture.
One of my favortie moments was the first time our blue dog jumped OVER our BIG sectional sofa...while guests were sitting there! LOL... He was subordinate to one of our greyhounds...and the greyhound was blocking the path to the water bucket... he is a coonhound... he found a way around! Another priceless moment is...when he lets his voice loose in the house with a newbie... heart attack material! He is very obedient most of the time though... if a cat got loose in the house(or obviously a raccoon) he'd lose the obedience in a second... the Hunt Never goes away completely if they have it!

"MINE ARE BLUE"

Have had several generation's of of hounds in the house but they are not allowed on the furniture. Some that made Dual Gr while they was livin in the house. If they didn't hunt they don't get the chance to live in my house.

My current foot warmer the "Bum" has lived in here since he was a fledgling & he can on occassion tree some coon!!

Wouldn't have any other type in this house other than a hound. They do need to have the proper personality though & not be a hyper wall bouncer.

Have two other's that live down yonder in hunt head quarter's but they are crated at night. I wouldn't mind gettin down to 4 hounds & keep them all in the house. For me health wise it is awsome to let them out to do their thing & run off a lil steam yet get them in when I want to.

The real bonus from it all is the one on one time as far as handling goes. I don't need a leash when I go just say,"COME ON BUM" & he's beside me no matter how far or how many track's we walk over.

This one has picked up on my health issue's as well. When I am in a bad way he know's it! Two day's ago I was down hard for the count & he was beside me either stairin at me or nudgin me the whole day till I went to bed & he still kept coming in checkin on me. He woke me several time's by lickin my hand & slept rite next to me on the floor aposed to his own bed.

You'd be surprised the intellect that you'd never know about in when you have them in a kennel.

I share a bed with two

both redbones. both hunt--not a lot, but they hunt.. the only time they would be banished is if they got into a skunk.

one has been a housedog since he was a pup. he was a devilish pup but handles well now. he is a gritty bear dog, too. the other one was purchased a little less than two. he is a little immature still at 2 1/2, but has no trouble treeing a coon. his house manners aren't as good--he will steal human food if given the opportunity.

both get in the swamps but they clean themselves off pretty well. they smell better than a lot of hounds I know even though they don't get bathed.

the only problem with it that I can see is that their coats aren't as thick. We get a fair amount of below zero weather here. the older one will hunt in that and is fine as long as he keeps moving. the younger one came from the south and hates the cold--he shivers a lot. I think he'd have a furrier coat if I kept him outside, but he loves the indoor life.

Both spend a couple of days a week in a second floor apartment in Brooklyn NY. The rest of the time, they have the run of a fenced yard in the Catskill mountains, but come inside whenever they want. They are a barrel of fun, but a big presence in the house. Wouldn't work if you like a lot of frilly delicate stuff. If they wind a coon in the yard at 2 am, they will open. That can be a startling way to wak up

leaving the hounds outside tied to a tree is easy, bringing them inside and teaching them to be a part of the family,thats the good stuff. As for the hunting, the dog will hunt or they wont. I dont believe having a hound inside makes them lazy.

i prefer animals outside and people in the house, but if it isnt my house then it isnt my problem. I dont think it affects a hunting dog at all, in my opinion it affects the house though

I have 5 and 3 are in the house. They all 3 crash in bed with me and the wife. Doesn't affect hunting ability at all. Only problem is not taking all 3 or any when you put the light on to go hunting. It's like world war 3. I try to take the lights and collars outside early to avoid the disaster but they get wise to that to.

I've had an old plott hound and a young cur dog in the house. IMO opinion it is easier to take a "coondog" and keep it in the house than raise a pup in the house and make it a "coondog". The hounds I know that have been raised in the house have been too spoiled and seem to never make it in the woods. Some might track and tree a coon but are hardly "coondogs". I know of a few "coondogs" that were kept in the house with no problems.
I've brought my dogs in the house from time to time due to weather or whatever and they have done fine. I just keep them in aircrates when I can not keep a close eye on them. My old plott was one of the best dogs I've ever had in the house. She just laid in one of her beds and never made a peep.

she is early in the training process, but she tree's on squirrels

this is her early in training. the training was for the rotty, also lives int the house, but she started treeing too so yah, i took it



and i got 2 squirrels with her, then i got bored so, i stopped.

and i have a 6 year old, that kinda hunts, that lives in the house...
here is her tree'd, on something, i think its a den tree, but i dont know if a coon lives there or not, but there's a hole

the following hounds have spent their entire time with me as housedogs:
grnitech tuckers the techno cowboy dog- won three state championships, placed three times lee crawford invitational, TWBFA hunt dog of the year.
dual grand THE TRUTH DOG made grand by four years of age while also producing three litters [24 pups] of which 7 became titled dogs.
ntch [four wins to grand] THE HALF TRUTH DOG -born in the house, raised in the house.
grand nite ch MOUNDSCREEK TRULY XTRA DOG won zone 1 this year, TWBFA hunt dog of year, went from open to grand in 11 weeks. xtra spent all of her youth in the house, spends about half of the time outside now.

grand nite ch CREDIT RIVER TUCKER has spent about half of his life as a housedog.
last night hide hunting we treed/caught 5 plusses, one minus, two circles with dogs that all live indoors. [multiple owners].

yes, your hunting dogs can live in the house. they probably actually have a better chance of turning out than dogs raised outside.
