Minnesota Hunters
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable opener.
Harvest season opened at 9 am today. Between 11am - 1pm I found 4 illegal conibear sets. The local game warden and I collected some steel and 1 big sow coon this afternoon.
I took plenty of pics. Each set was a 220 directly over the mouth of a roadside coon den. Lazy SOB doesn't even bother getting out and setting culverts. Game warden believed most of them had been set for over 24 hours. None of them were tagged. This trapper was obviously a complete amateur. I'm sure it is someone local, and whoever it is sure is setting a bad example for trappers.
Warden said in a few hours this morning he checked 6 trappers and he virtually never checks a trapper simply because you never see them. Also said a stretch of highway along the Root River was full of baited box sets. He ran into a couple good trappers that said they had been run out of they're normal territory because they found so many illegal sets the don't want to be seen trapping in the same areas. Mostly around Rochester.
Although these box sets and conibears over the dens are all legal except the lack of name tags, these sets are all dog killers.
brogy, are trappers held liable for killing a hunting dog in minn. just wondering..i'm not sure about wis. either!!

I do not believe trappers can be held liable for catching a dog, especially in a legal set. The trapping association has put out notices regarding the presence of hunting dogs and such being abound urging trappers to use precautions but in my opinion it really does nothing. They also print out instructions how to remove a dog from a conibear which to me is funny because whenever it comes time for regulation proposals and DNR input meetings they deny that dogs ever get caught in a 220 conibear.
Conibear using trappers seemed to be on the hot seat up here a year or two ago, not because the other proactive moves by other sporting groups but rumor has it a higher up DNR official had a dog get caught in a conibear.
brogy
Did you get out tonight??
I went out the last 2 nights with the lovebirds. We hunted Josh's Wild Cat & Sammy, & Alex' Joey.
I hunted Sky & Sky Rocket early Friday and treed a coon in style before meeting up with Josh and Alex.
It was kinda slow going most the weekend. I hunted spots I've been hunting lately treeing 2-3 and seeing 5-6.
We ended up with 4, we hunted until about midnight. We had fun though.
We ran into Bud around 9 pm. He had 4 and was going home to switch dogs. Crazy ol' fart. 80 years old and out hunting most of us.
From some other reports, others didn't do that well.

Good grief....Marc were those set like that along a road?
Yep. All of them were 3-5 paces off the road. Anyone walking a dog down the road on one of those Xtenda leashes would have a problem.
I didn't go looking for these. They are right there in plain sight in the road ditch.
thats real sporty, starve or commit suicide!!!

That's my point exactly. These are LEGAL sets except they have no ID tags. If the landowner had set these they would be legal. Minnesota's conibear regulations suck.
How do you like the UPC tag still on the one set? Completely amateur, one of them was even tied off with a string (like shoestring) the rest were wire or cable, anything you could find around the garage. Last year he used a brand new shiny piece of chain.
In the second pic you can almost see how the dirt has staind the side of the trap due to rain or moisture. That pic was taken within 2 hours of season opening and clearly it hadn't rained within that time frame. The coon in the 4th pic was already stiff, also had been caught prior to season opening.
I believe I ran into the suspect last night. We were turning out down the road and saw a car pull up to the trap site. I started up the truck and headed up there and the car drove away. I got the first part of the license plate.
I've noticed some young kids driving around in the area more as of lately. I just assumed it was kids out booze cruising. I think they are doing both, boozing, coon "bashing" and checking they're "traps".
If this kid catches a dog, he won't need to worry about the warden.
did anybody do worth a **** last night and get under any coon?
we had good luck treed alot of coon

You're scarin' the hell out of me with pictures like that!! I've been thinking that is what it's going to be like around here as soon as season gets open. With the talk of higher prices and gas going down, I'm not sure it's going to be much fun to even turn a dog loose during season and wonder if it's going to come home alive. Take care, Ron.
marc we hunted redwing last year 1 dog got stuck in a foot trap then we saw little orange things hanging on about 15 trees all traps set 3 foot off road and had just weights used to hold them down no tags on any of them i think they got lost in the river but im not sure
Some turd catches one of my blues in a conibear he's gonna have a very bad day.
I have been up here a few days now , we are making lots of trees but mostly dens. The few coon we have been able to get are huge. The smallest one 24.8# up to 26.12# Hope to get a few more tonight.
