Sorry to hear that. I'll never regret taking the trip down to Ottosen this spring to they're TWBFA Sectional. To listen to Howie give everyone a hard time and call out casts was worth the trip in itself.
I think Ottosen has a hunt next weekend, it just isn't going to be the same without Howie.
The sport has truly lost one of its local legends.

Howards daughter called me last night while i was hunting and gave me the sad news. Howard was a good friend and and a wealth of knowledge about dogs and the sport we all love. my thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to all of Howards family, and i will always remember how much joy and excitement Hunting and especialy the youth envolved in our sport brought to Howard.

Our our thoughts & prayers go out to Howard and his family. If any of you ever got the chance to go to howards home, I'll bet you got treated like you were part of the family. I know I did. Spent a week with them about 10 years ago but have known them for ever it seems like. Truely a good friend that will be missed.
Just thinking of all the things Howard has done for the State of Iowa coonhunters.
God Bless

I was just thinking it would be nice if the Iowa state coonhunters put on something for the memory of Howard. Maybe it is a little soon to sugest this but for every thing Howard has done for the state it is the least we can do.

Here are the details of the funeral arrangements.

The visitation will be Monday October 27 from 5:00pm- 8:00pm at the Harris Funeral Home in West Bend, IA.

The burial will be before the service on Tuesday October 28 with the service at 2:00pm at the church in Ottosen.

I had talked to Howard on wednesday and he was his old self. I talked to Blaine this morning and he said Howard had been at Foster Caryl's until about 2:30pm and went home from there. They found Howard a couple of hours later laynig on the kitchen floor. The presume it was a heart attack.

Blaine also expressed how many people had called and expressed their sympathy. The family greatly appreciates all the prayers.

Howard we miss You!

i was thinking the same thing about a memorial hunt or something in Howards name. I will talk to our other officers and directors and see if we can come up with something to honor Howards memorie. he has done so much to promote our sport and the Iowa State Coonhunters. What i will really miss is all the great and usually very colorfull Howie stories.

I got to know Howard well over the last 5 years and considered him a very good friend and a very good person. Getting to know Howard has been one of the best things coon hunting has done for me. Howard was truely a unique individual and a huge asset to the coon hunting world. He will be greatly missed by the Gotch Valley Coon hunters, Iowa State Coon Hunters, and especially the youth of our sport.

It will be hard for me to look at my dogs and not think of Howard over the next few weeks. I'm sure sometimes it'll make me sad to think of my friend and how I miss him. But I'm sure I'll smile many times more recalling a story Howard told or succeeding with some piece of sage advice gained from picking his brain or just his demeanor or mannerisms. I cherish the time I've spent with Howard and feel I'm a better person for it.

Howards family will be in my families thoughts and prayers.

The Thompson family have been very close friends of mine for a long time. Howard and Betty were my 'Iowa Parents', since I am a 'hillbilly from Missouri', as Howard would say. I have stayed with them many times, ate lots of cookies at the kitchen table, drank pots of coffee, and hunted lots of nights with a Twin Rivers dog. Howard would always talk of his family, his friends, bird dogs, and his beloved treeing walkers during our frequent visits. He was always there for me when I needed advice, a new pup to start, or just needed a laugh. I cherish the time I coon hunted, visited, and went turkey hunting with him. He was a great friend and I'll miss him more than anyone will ever know.

Prayers for Blaine, Harlan, Holly, all of the Thompson family, and Howard's many friends.

I'll sure miss him.

Well, many of you know I've spent some time out there in Iowa with Howard for the last five years or so. Talked to him about once a week on the phone. I can't put into words what he meant to me. I honestly can't. Not right now anyway.

My thoughts are with the Thompson family and Howard's many friends. It's like I've lost a member of my own family and I'll never forget him.

This was one of the hardest things I have heard for many years. I always had a great time with Howard everytime we were together. I bought my first short hair from Howard and also my first Coondog as well. I meet Howard when I was 6 years old and I hunted with him a lot growing up. Always a great man to be around and always had a good story to tell. Howard taught me a life long lesson and that was never put a price on a dog if you don't want to sell it. I thank him very much for that.

Howard was the lead man in the State of Iowa for the Youth and there is no doubt about that.

Thanks for all the good times Howard and I am gonna miss ya.

We met Howard 3 1/2 years ago, but he was the kind of person who made you feel like you had known him a life time. He always made us feel welcome with his warmth and kindness. The knowledge we gained from our visits with Howard is priceless. We will miss Howard so much and we thank him for the great memories. Our thoughts and prayers to his family.

Good-bye to a dear Friend

In the 17 years I knew Howard and Ma(Betty) did they ever not make me feel like part of the family!! I learned more from that man than I can put on paper or in a book. He was the second dad that was a hunter and was always willing to tell me the truth about a dog or life lesson I needed to hear. I talked to Howie the day before he passed for better than an hour!! Howard and I hunted and fished together for most of those 17 years, He was with me when I killed my first Tom turkey, heck he invited me to his honey hole!!! I will cherish that picture we took that day like it was gold!
I remember all the good times we had hunting birds and coon together, and I know whwn he saw St. Pete he first asked about Ma then asked where DUSTY and SUGAR was cuz he was goin huntin!!!!! As a tear falls down my cheek i will surely miss him deeply and all my sympathy to all the family and his huntin family as we all miss him greatly!!!!!
