Sportmix

Kurt, I have been feeding the 26/18 for about a year now and really like it. The dogs like it, they look good, hunt good, and it keeps weight on good. What I have really noticed is the amount of clean-up in the kennel...............hardly any at all..!!!

I have fed ...................Purina, Purina Pro Plan, Purina Hi-Pro, River Run, The Pride, Diamond, Diamond Extreme Athelete, Ol' Roy, Hi-Standard, Pzazz, Kent Native, Pedigree,BlackGold, Joy, and prob 6-9 more brands I forgot about. The only one that I thought was better was Diamond Extreme Athelete........that is some good feed !!!!!!

I pay a little over $19 for 50#...............................Tim

sports mix

We feed sports mix at DIEHARD BLUE DOG KENNELS an we love it. We just bought a pallet of it actually. I personaly know the sales rep. We have feed everything out there an the only thing we really liked was black gold. We couldnt get black gold any more be cause of our location so we switched to sports mix. The dogs love it, one stool per dog and firm, YOU DONT HAVE TO FEED THE DOGS ALOT OF IT. I recamend The 26/18 mini chunk blue bag. The mini chunk is a really small pellet of food the dogs love it.

Shoot I give 21.45 for the green bag. Sportmix is the best dog food Ive fed so far.

I fed it

I fed Sports Mix for 2 years a loved it The only reason I switched was it was not practical to drive as far as I had to to get it. The blue bag is what I fed I can't remeber the % of it 26 something.

Feed the maintenance around 20 and some change and the feed store is about 1 minute from the house reckon i'll never switch, I really like it dogs look good, perform outstanding i got a 10 year old leopard that i noticed a major difference in within the first week of feeding it.

Posted by s/s on 10-15-2008 11:43 AM:

We have fed it for about 2 years now...We had a problem of finding something that all the dogs liked. They seemed to all like this feed..It has a really good rich color and the bites are very small...Smells decent as far as dog food goes...The kennel clean up is not bad either..As far as price, it's about the most economical around here...

I do have a couple that I feed Purina to, but by my choice...

I've got mixed feelings about Sportmix myself. At home we feed all our dogs the 21/12. Our deer dogs are on automatic feeders, and I feed my coon dogs by hand. I've got a bluetick female that has a tendency to get a little heavy, and I keep her a good size on just one dinner cup of it per day. She could actually still stand to lose some weight. My coon dogs look pretty good, but I don't like the way the coats on our July Hounds look-they shed a TON, all year long. On the whole about half our dogs on it have loose stools, and the other half have regular. When I take my coon dogs out of town to work with me each week, I started feeding them Purina Hi Pro. Even the first week I noticed a difference in their coats and body condition, and they kept really firm stools (and not a lot of them).
I have to say I really DO NOT like the Sportmix Puppy. I started my new little Walker out on Purina Pro Plan Puppy, and he never seemed to have an upset stomach. We (gradually) switched him over to the Sportmix since it's cheaper over the weekend, and he has had the runs terribly for about 3 days. I noticed the same thing with my redbone pup when she was eating it. Needless to say he's back to Pro Plan. I agree that he seemed to like the Sportmix more, but since he's too small to go outside yet I'd rather he didn't keep an upset stomach. Overall I think it's a decent feed, but I do like the Purina better. I'll keep feeding the deer dogs Sportmix because I'd go broke feeding all of them a more expensive brand, but it will be Purina for my coon dogs.

I don't use the orginal formulas.

I feed the premium SportMix versions.

Have you tried the premium SportMix versions? Which versions are you using?

There is a difference in and day and night from the original version to the premium version besides cost.

I believe it's just the original formulas. My fiance is the one that decided he wanted to feed SportMix, and since he's paying for it I couldn't complain too much! I'm really not even sure our feed dealer carries a different version. Is there a big price difference? I might have to look into that...

SCBluetickgal, I too noticed when I first changed over the SPortmix the stool got loose and runny,. But after a week or so they went back to normal and very little cleanup was needed in their kennels.

SCBluetickgal, here is their website with their different formula's. They list the Premiums first and then a link to the Originals:

http://www.sportmix.com/dog/premiumDogFood.tpl

As far as running stools on switching foods, that happens with just about any foods if there wasn't a gradual changeover and it still could happen.

Just depends on the dog........I have a Lab with sensitive stomach that even a gradual food change will mess his system up. I have one dog that could eat a different brand every day and it not bother him.

i can tell you why your stool is loose i talked to the guy that works for sports mix an alot of people run into this problem. You need to mix your feed properly when switching most people when they switch sports mix they mix it for three or four days. you really need to mix it for around two weeks. If you still have the problem your probably feeding your dog to much. I found that out with my dogs. Alot of your older dogs only need A HALF A CUP of sports mix. Sport mix really does all our dogs good. If you cut your feed down I think you will see a big diffrence.
