put him on the lamb and rice. not chicken . the chicken could be his problem.

I feel your pain!!!! Let me share my experience with you too my friend. I had the SAME issue with my bench setter. I've been feeding him pro plan since he was born (i prefer the Pro Plan Selects and Performance formulas). I never had a problem with him. Then when he turned 5 months his ears went out of control! It was crazy how bad they were. They were red and inflammed and causing him much pain and discomfort. So I went to one vet who put him on Odomax and a multi purpose ear cleaner-did not work. One of my good friends is a vet (licensed in multiple states even) and I discussed my frustration with her. She offered me some good advice and told me that usually it's not food allergies off the bat although it can be. She said there are other things to check first and suggested getting a swab done. I went to a different vet (more specialized) and she gave me some anti inflamatories (they really helped) and some ear drops (a University of IL formula) and suggested the food allergy thing and put him on z/d (much to my dismay, but I tried it anyway). Well, keep in mind he is a show dog with long hair, he blew his coat on z/d (it doesn't have the fatty acids he needs and the vet agreed when I called). I didn't notice the z/d doing anything at all for his ears. So I went back to pro plan. They then put him on a strong oral antibiotic to treat the infection from the inside. His main problem is that the cartilage in his ears is heavy so the drops were not getting down to the infection. The anti biotics with the anti inflammatories did wonders. His infection cleared right up. Because of his heavy cartilage I do have to clean his ears more frequently, but at least we finally got the infection to cease. I hope this helps!!! Good luck! If I can help you further, let me know.

I have a dog with chronic ear infections..........it's airborne allergies not food allergies.

Basically the dog is on anahistamines (sp) for the rest of her life and weekly ear cleanings.

Did the specialist try treating the ears? What did you use? Why does he think it is a food allergy? Did he do any tests?

Fugate, your right, alot of $$ in it.

My female's is airborne...........sure wish it was food at least I could help control it....with airborne, not that easy.

Now I had 3 with food allergies and it took like 4 different feeds before I found one that worked.

2 had the scratching and licking paws and 1 had an ear infection that wouldn't go away.

Once I found a food that solved the problems, major noticeable changes almost immediately.

BUCKSHOT WHAT FOOD DID YOU TRY AN WHAT ONE WORKED FOR YOU

Posted by Buckshot on 10-10-2008 08:36 PM:

My problem started about 2 months after the Diamond aflotoxin issue.

If memory serves me correctly I went from Diamond regular to Diamond Natural L/R, Diamond Natural C/R, and Diamond Natural B/R...............10 week periods each on each formula.

I then switched to SportMix L/R and problem solved.

Been on SportMix since then. After awhile I bought a non L/R forumula of SportMix to see how they would do on it and still doing good.

EDIT:

Here is an old thread I posted in about it. My memory was off 1 week on the food trials.

allergies

I have one with allergies. it did not cause ear infections, but caused her hair to fall out in spots about hte size of a pencil eraser all over her body....and then her feet woudl swell up 2-3x normal size. started in '04. went to vet and we did a allergen panel blood test. turns out she is allergic to peanuts, canola oil and 5 types of mold. I was feeding them peanut butter treats at the time.

The vet ordered allergy serum and she began it w/in the month. w/in the first yr I noticed that during the summer/late summer months she was not breaking out as much and no feet swelling. now, i only give her the injections during the summer rather than all year and no more breakouts.

while she was pregnant, and her feet swelled, I have to put powder on her feet where she was licking them rather than the oral antibx.

if you think they have allergies, get a blood test to confirm. it will be more to the point of what they are allergic to and not have to keep switching feed and upsetting the GI tract.

Cynthia, unfortunately, if the dog has food allergy, you still have detemerine the food source of what is causing it.

That is why you have to swith feeds are run trial test as well as cut out any treats to narrow down which is causing the food allergy problems.

fugate, here is a good article on food allergies (has link to airborn allergies too)

I have a Blue dog that has the same trouble. I have a VERY LARGE collection of ear medicans here... Found out it was a yest infection BEST cure is Vagical the same stuff a woman would use for a yeat infection. Clean the ears with warm soapy water the dry them use a Q-Tip and put in their ears. I have to do this 2 time a week and do not have any problems. For some reason ( no one knows) it a summer thing for him. Give it a try I have tryed all the foods drops back woods home brewed remides and a OLD coon hunter told me about it. works for me.

the summer thing may be becasue there is more moisture in the air and on the ground with rain/wet ground/etc. that is when my dog's will flare up as well.
