oops there was a coon!

The 2nd time we treed tonite was a little tree, without looking ,kicked him off the tree,twice,he went back treed harder,oops he did have the coon!guess the dogs smarter than me! anyone ever made this mistake?

Not really... I usually make sure before I whip my dog..... wow

That is done alot more than you think.

I always look, I don't want to encourage them if they have trash or slick. I've seen some coons up some small trees.

Yea it was a boneheaded move on our part!he did not tree real good at first but we were real close to him, I gave him a bite of me cheeseburger! Good dog!

I know a guy who took his young pup hunting one night by himself and the dog opened up, run the track and fell treed. He walked into the tree and shined the tree and found nothing. Hhe was happy that the dog was hunting being it was, I believe, the first time he had cut him loose by himself. He leashed the dog up and walked him away for awhile and cut him loose again. The pup ran back in the direction they had just come from and opened up and fell treed again. The guy walked back, a little frustrated and found the dog treed on the same tree. He dropped back and shined the tree one more time just in case and saw nothing. He leashed the pup and led him away again. This time he walked a great distance away and cut him loose again. The pup ran off. A little while later the pup opened and started trailing again. He ended up heading back in the same direction he had just walked away from. The pup fell treed once more. The guy, this time really mad, walked all the way back to the tree to find the pup treed on the same tree. He leashed the pup and started to walk away and decided to look one more time. This time the coon looked right at him. He shot that one out and praised the pup.

a friend told me that his dogs had treed a porky after sending the others away he was going to shoot it out put scope on it an right next to it was a coon so called others back an pet them dogs up gave them the coon he said it's happened a couple times for him he always looks now real good first.

if i can't find the coon after ten minutes or so when i lead my dog out i always look bak and he is usually watchin me.

Me and Elvis did it with my Jeff dog one night. Whooped him off a slick and then noticed the coon was there. That dog was pissed at us for the rest of the night.

I've done it before and felt bad about it but I think it all evens out for the times they get by with it when your not sure.

My papaw said he and a buddy shined a tree twice one night and couldn't find a coon. The dogs went back to it a third time and this time they found it. It was no higher than fifteen feet off the ground and they had been overlooking it, looking up in the top of the tree, which was a big one.

I have done that more then once. As a matter of fact,as resent as a little over a week ago. My nephew found the coon while I was "sending him on". He came back into the tree and started treeing.Let me say a few things about this. This is going to happen. Usually the dog has a lot to do with it. If they make a few slick trees you tend to be cocked and loaded when you get there.So after the second or third slick tree over a couple of nights, your patience has been worn pretty thin. The last thing you want to do is go to every tree and shine and blow that squaller for 10-15 minutes. So a mistake like that is more common then you think. In my way of thinking, The dog set me up for it. I have never had one hold it against me and have never had one to stop treeing.Remember though,I do hunt Walkers and it is nearly impossible to hurt the tree in them.Here is how I look at it.
Me and my dogs are a team. I would say they are responsible for 80% of the mistakes made on our team. If I hunt and care,and feed them, they should hold up there end in spite of that other 20% in mistakes made by me. Dont worry about it. worse things will and do happen.

i almost did that the other night with my nitech female. little tree. i could see every spot on it. shined with my bright light an squalled for about 15 min and almost whipped her but had my nephew shake the tree an there was a coon in plain sight. it was on a limb about as big as a barrel of a 12 gauge. so i shook it out to her.

I had my dog walk up a tree right beside me as i was walking and tree a grabbed him and pulled him away the guy i was with yelped up at me and said you might want to bring you dog back here yep right in the top set a big fat masked bandit I felt like a A$$.

Just last week

we were hunting our female. she treed and was moving back and forth between a couple trees about 40 yards apart. We thought we would turn the old man loose to help settle her. He ran in worked a few mins and started blowing the top out with her. We got to the tree and I was mad at him as soon as I saw it. It couldnt have been any bigger than my arm and 20 feet tall. I have a lot of confidence in him so I looked for the sake of looking and sure nuf right in the top sat a kitten that couldnt be more than 5 pounds. So I guess I know why she was moving between trees. she had momma or the others up the other tree. If you have a fairly accurate dog give him the benifit of the doubt. Had I walked to numerous slicks with my old dog I probably wouldnt even put a light up that one.
