questions about showing

i have never been to a show and i was wonderin if all u do is set them up on a bench my friend wants to try to show one of his and his dog has a knot on his tail u cant see it or nothin its got hair over it but u can feel it can that have any effect on the outcome of a show

Posted by mainpayne on 10-07-2008 09:33 PM:

IT TAKES ALOT OF TIME AND A WHOLE LOT OF PATIENCE U NEED TO WORK THE DOG ON THE BENCH COSISTENTLY IT NOT ABOUT PUTTING THEM ON ON THE BENCH IT MORE ABOUT CONFORMATION.

Posted by skyblu on 10-07-2008 09:41 PM:

Also

Dog needs to walk correctly on a loose lead.
Best to go to some shows to see how everything is done.

yeah i know i bought a dog and it has some points in shows and i told a boy i hunt with and he has a male and he said something about wanting to show him but it has that bump or knot and he wanted to know if it would hurt him in a show

Posted by Blueticks#1 on 10-07-2008 09:46 PM:

yeah thats what i told him we would do

Posted by countrygirlcoon on 10-07-2008 11:50 PM:

the knot should not fault him, since it was probably due to a hunting accident or injury... As far as what you would want to acheive on the bench....

look at how the legs are straight, the head is slightly elevated, and the back has a small arch. You want a straight line leading from the shoulders down to the feet in the front. The hind legs you want a straight line from the hocks down to the feet. A big key is for the dog to have tight feet. Not splayed out or turned, but up on their toe. (this is the hardest thing to get a dog to do, since it is not natural for them.)

IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND DEDICATION....
everynight when I go down to feed the dogs, I just simply practice on the ground and make them stand, then 3-4 times a week I will put them on the bench.

Think of it this way....the amount of time it takes to make a good coon dog is the same amount of time it takes to make a good show dog!

how can i get her to keep her head still do u have any tips or tricks

Posted by Geminite on 10-08-2008 07:59 PM:

Every time you practice with her make her hold her head still and then make her stay there longer each time. She will get used to it....

what are the main things the judges look for and what will get the points took away from u and how long do they have to stay still on the bench

Posted by countrygirlcoon on 10-08-2008 10:30 PM:

For what ever breed you are showing, make sure you become very familiar with the breed standards....every breed is different and has different requirements.

Here is the point system a bench show judge uses....
POINTS:

Head........................10
Neck.........................5
Shoulders................10
Chest and Ribs........10
Back and Loins........15
Hindquarters...........10
Elbows....................5
Legs and Feet.........20
Coat and Color........5
Stern.......................5
General Makeup......5
Total.......................100

Another thing... work on one thing each day. If you want your dog to practice keeping its head still work on that for about fifteen minutes and then call it a day, do this until you accomplish the desired outcome. Then move on to something else, but incorporate the already accomplished position as well... if that makes sense.

Dogs are like children, they get bored with doing something for too long and then get stubborn, lol.

As far as how long a dog will have to stand on the bench, it really depends on the judge....I have had one on the bench for 5-15 min. it all depends on the judge, and how long they decide to take....

i don't think it matters how the dog stands because it ain't based on looks. they got a set of breed standards that relate to what a dog is suppose to look like and the shape of the dog. me and my dad went to the OMCBA (official mountain cur breeding association) hunt and watched the bence show and a there was a dog laying on the bench and won it's division.

first off m4rcut you obviously can't read very good because this forum isn't about hunting it's about showing dogs and the list that they have for breed lines has it's own specific set of guidel lines that a judge has to go by and thats all they look for.

one would think that wouldnt one? it depends on the BSJ. some ACTUALLY evaluate the dog on the ground and their conformation, others only look at how long and still they can stand on the bench.

it would be nice if they used the breed standards to evaluate a dog.

ole bo. . . . . . . . . . this is the sport of coon hunting and coon dog showing. . . . . not squirrel hunting or showing . . . . . . I don't know what you backwards people who show squirell dogs do but thats not how showing a coon hound works

Curiosity has got me on this...

I know that a dog cannot be faulted for injuries due to hunting, but what about being a little underweight when they are being hunted hard? As long as they are well muscled and poportioned just a little 'ribby and bony in places'.

Are chances just that you just need to wait until you have a little weight put back on them?

Sheer curiosity...

huntingirl it want let me enter the website u posted i click on enter and my internet shuts down do u or anyone else know another website that might help me

well your right about the coon hunting and a coon website but still yet bench showing is bench showing no matter what way you want to look at M4RCUT and if you don't know that you need to just piss on the fire call in the dogs and go to the house cuz you don't know jack

I have seen the poorest of poorest dogs win their class or breed...if there isn't any competition. I have seen dogs have skin mites, or mange and were put on the bench and still placed. By no means is this an excuse not to take care of your hounds, but a HUNTING dog that is thin, or "ribby" is very common at shows... and is not faulted by the Judge. (most of the time). It actually makes it e a little easier for a judge to see the bone structure of a dog. Now an overweight dog, it is harder for a judge to see their structure and may hinder their decission.

NOW... FOR WHAT OL BO SAID:

"i don't think it matters how the dog stands because it ain't based on looks. they got a set of breed standards that relate to what a dog is suppose to look like and the shape of the dog. me and my dad went to the OMCBA (official mountain cur breeding association) hunt and watched the bence show and a there was a dog laying on the bench and won it's division."

If the dog did not have any competition in its class or breed, and did not have any DISQUALIFYING faults (according to breed standards) it could very well win on the bench, even though it did not "stand" on the bench.

All I can say BLUETICK#1 just go to as many shows as possible and compete, ask the Judge to help you set your dog up after the show is over, and ask them what fault he/she had with your dog.(MOST ARE WILLING TO HELP) This helped me so much....I learned what each Judge was looking for and how they liked dogs to be set up on the Bench. All Judges judge different, so just get use to it.

I have to agree with most of the advice countrygirlcoon is giving you. But I would like to add a few notes. U.K.C. has their individual breed standards for bench shows right there in the same rule book as the night hunt rules. Each of the 6 breed standards have been set forth by the individual breed associations because, even thogh they're all coonhounds, each breed is built just a little different. For example, one of the most prominent & looked for features of a Bluetick, is a deep, wide chest. The new rulebooks comes out every year in the January issue of Bloodlines. If you don't subscribe, you can buy the rulebook alone for $4-5.
The other point I'd like to make, & this is directed specifically to those "coonhunters" that scoff at bench shows & think they're a waste of time. If you know anything about the history & evolution of the coonhound, you would understand that breed standards came about solely for the purpose of improving these dogs' performance in the woods. A healthy dog with good strong bones, can take the shock absorbtion of hard hunting up & down mountains & hard terrain, a deep chested dog has better lung capacity, a tight footed dog has less injuries to the feet because the pads are thicker, etc. Once the standards were developed, bench shows became a way for a body to show off a nice looking hound & kill some time before a night hunt, and now they have become pleasureable events for the whole family.
So, the next time your running your mouth about those "lookin' pretty dogs" keep in mind, those dogs are the direct result of alot of selective breeding & hard work by the men since George Wahington brought the first hounds on American soil. Most of them are gone now, but they understood years ago the importance of impoving the endurance & quality of a working dog.
You should too.

Off the box now...

knot

get a vet to look at the knot, it is probably a cyst and they can draw the fluid out with a syringe.
