Dog Discipline

I was wondering on how some hunters scold(punish) there dog?

Depends on what she's doing most of the time now the yelling works pretty good .

Most of my dogs want to please me. I do better when I hurt their feelings for doing something wrong than doing something physical to them. There are some dogs that won't do anything for someone they don't like. I have used a switch at times and I have a tritronics that I rarely use. I think alot of faults can be bred out of dogs and I try to breed dogs that I don't have to correct alot.

because I use all the above, but RARELY the whipping part. I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever used physical punishment on any dog. The voice usually does the trick. The collar is used for barking & boundiaries & breaking of off game. My dogs are so intuned to my feelings, that they know if I'm in a good mood, bad mood or goofy mood. Any dog that spends alot of time with their owner knows this & a dog that wants to please, will read the signs & act accordingly. My dogs aren't just for hunting, they are family pets & members of the family. I raise all with love & kindness & they willingly give back, exactly what they receive.

we always start our dogs out with just scolding then as they get older it helps to use the shock coller some. we want them to understand when you talk to them they do what you ask of them.

I don't have a shock collar, would probably use one if I had one. I yell most often - and they know if they don't straighten up with the scolding/yelling it's something worse next. Mostly I have to yell at them to shut up - I have a lot of hounds and a lot of neighbors, so if they tune up and don't quiet on their own after a minute or so and I stick my head out and tell them to "COOL IT", they know if they don't shut it off it's the water hose next. I'd have to be really mad to whip them but i have. I've given what really amounts to a "love tap" as discipline on the bench, rarely do they ever get a "real" whipping - but rarely do they need it - they're pretty good dogs ;0)

I have been known to use all of the options listed. Not saying that they are my personal choice, but at some point in time, they all have a use in getting the point across. I normally start pups off in the house. Training and house breaking at an early age will enforce to the pups who the alpha is. Later down the road, the dogs will know what you want by using certain words. If not, thats when the other options start coming into play. Just the way it's done around my place.

I try to use an escalating system. If scolding does not work, at some point you have to work up to "get thier attention".

discipline

There is no ONE way to discipline (which should be considered TRAINING) a dog. Your dog should work & behave to please you. Negative intimidation is not the way to have a happy, well adjusted dog that will "bust his buttons" to make you pleased with his performance. Everytime you come in contact with your dog your are training him. So allowing & requesting acceptable behavior should always be uppermost in your mind. If you are consistent, and enforce requests logically, and in proportion to the result needed, a good trainer can teach a dog new commands with as few as 3 correct responses in a row. There are no bad dogs - but there ARE bad owners & or handlers. A dog's tail should be wagging while working. And a dog should move TOWARD the hand, not away. If a dog shies from the hand it's a sign of training by intimidation. Shock collars have their place - but only in the hands of someone who understands the psychology & timing.Too many dogs are ruined with shock collars by people who use them out of anger instead of reason. Disciplne covers a broad area & cannot be described in a few words.

Dogs are very similar to children, you have to teach them who's the authority figure, and if they disobey that figure, they're going to get punished in someway.

I've never owned a shock collar. Sometimes I wish I did though!!!

I believe in quick, decisive and memorable punishment when the time comes. However, I also believe that sometimes a gentler persuasion is more effective than an all out, "Come to Jesus".

I GUESS IM EASY.I EXPECT MY DOGS TO OBEY ME WITHOUT QUESTION BUT THIS IS NOT ALWAYS TRUE. I DO VERY LITTLE HARD PUNISHMENT IF ANY. I EXPECT MY DOGS TO PLEASE BECAUSE OF THEIR LOVE TO WANT TO. I GIVE MY DOGS LOTS OF ATTENTION I ONLY HAVE 2 AND EXPECT THEM TO GIVE BACK IN LIKE MANNER.

I use all of the above depending on what the dog is doing. Usally a stern voice will do it but for running deer the shock collar and physical punishment comes in to stop it immediately because there are to many deer hunters that dont think a dog should be in the woods at all and will shoot a dog in a second even if their not running a deer so you cant give them a reason.
