Advice please...........

How do you get a dog to get hooked on the tree and stay. He is a good strike dog and will tree he just wants to be very sure there is a coon up. He will drop his head and double check the trail coming in. It has hurt me in some hunts. Thanks Roby

well, to me

it seems he wants to make sure, and that is not a bad thing.....now as far as the hunts go, if when he locks up, he generally has the coon, to where u would feel comfortable disciplining him back to the tree, in other words, if u think he has it when he drops his head, and checks, I woudl get a a switch, and pop his butt a time or two, and tell him to get back on that tree, and get a lil more severe everytime.....I have had this happen a couple times, but they are very accurate dogs that do this, and I personally am a pleasure hunter, and it wouldnt bother me, but try that....i am sure more ppl will come up with advice........btw, how old is the dog????

Roby

If the hound isnt staying hooked stop putting him in hunts and start takeing him to the woods,,, when you catch him off the tree
tie him where you catch him and shoot the coon out and dont let him put his mouth on it, this will give him something to think about the next time!! and if at all possiable try hunting him with a solid stay put tree hound, and if he is off the tree again tie him where you catch him and shoot out the coon and let the hound staying at the tree have the coon, but by no means let him get his mouth on it, you will start to see a difference in this hound after he understands if he aint on that tree he aint getting no coon.
