If You Have A Missing Dog, Check Here..

Go to www.petfinders.com you can not believe the coonhounds on there. Seems folks do there best to get dogs out of kill shelters and into no kill ones. This can move an animal several hundreds of miles from where it was found within days. Then they try to foster them out to temporary homes, that may mean another move of many miles. All said and done a hound lost in Kentucky can be here in Pa. within a week or less, maybe farther !!! This can complicate matters trying to find a lost dog by local means. I'm sure the intent of these folks in most cases is honorable not wanting to see the dog killed.. But getting them back to their rightfull owner seems almost impossible within the time frames I see on there. If this post helps one hunter out there get their dog back I'll be happy...

This is one of the reason I feel microchips are so important today.
I'm not 100% convinced every shelter checks them and I have this feeling some would decline to return or notify on a a coonhound even if they did check the chip but it is better than just hoping you see your dog on a website.

Petfinder is a wonderful tool to find lost dogs... microchips are even better.

I work for my county's underfunded and consistantly overcrowded shelter - we check every dog through the door for a microchip. It PAINS me to see how few have them. I've never seen a coonhound come in with one - consequently, I've never seen anyone come to claim the coonhounds we DO get... and believe me, if someone came to get the dog and said they were a hunter, we would hand the dog over immediately. We've returned numerous bird dogs just this past month. Your local animal shelter is not always the enemy

JIM I SEE WHAT YOUR SAYING BUT I DOUT IF THEY CHECK THEM EITHER. I USE TO LIVE IN THE CITY AND HAD A DOG GETT LOOSE AND FOUND AT THE POUND A WEEK LATER. AND HAD A COLLAR AND A NAME TAG ON IT. DID I GET A CALL FROM THE POUND NO I DIDNT. THEY DONT CARE. PLUS I LOST A HOUND IN THE WOODS. AND COULDNT FIND IT THAT NITE AND WENT BACK THE NEXT DAY TO LOOK FOR IT AND MET THE DOG KECKER ON THE ROAD AND HE HAD MY DOG . INSTED OF HIM OR ANY ONE ELSE CALLING ME THEY WAS GONIG TO TAKE IT TO THE POUND. I HAD TO PAY HIM $35 TO GET MY DOG BACK. THAT WASNT RITE. HE HAD MY DOG RITE WHERE I LOST IT. SO THAT SHOWS HOW MUCH THEY CARE!!!! PLUS WHERE I LIVE NOW IF SOME ONE CALLS IN ABOUT A DOG THEY TELL THEM TO KILL IT. OR IF THEY COME IN AND GET IT THEY WILL BE KILLED AND THROWN IT IN A DICH. INSTED OF TAKEING IT TO THE SHELTER. SO WHATS WRONG HERE
