Dog going silient on the ground

A friend has a 2 yr. old walker that started running track and treeing on it's own at about 13 mo. But here lately he has went silient on the ground and is starting to slick tree alot. Anybody know what may cause this and have any ways to maybe fix his problem.

I dont know how a person could make a hound open on track,
but I know how to break a hound from slick treeing alot,
get you a switch and when you are positive the coons not there spank his behind and send him away from that tree. A few of those should make him carefull of what he trees on..
anther way is to hunt him with a good honest hound that will not honer a slick tree, he might learn how to get down and check if you do that. IS the hound silent on a hot track too?
if so he may never be a open trail type hound.

A young dog sometimes does get smart and figure out that he can catch more coons on the ground if he hushes up. I know a dog that is on the all time PKC money list that was a first strike dog when he was younger, and then turned stone cold still on the ground after he got a little older.
As for throwing a lot of slicks on you now, that has got me a little confused. The still dogs that I have hunted with were very accurate. It seems to come with the territory of being silent.

It is hot and dry in alot of places and there are many open mouthed dogs that seem to be silent now. I will bet he opens up more when the tracking gets better. I would say the same conditions are causing the slick treeing. A switch can work wonders in that department but I usually wait until harvest season is in to correct slick treers. That way, when they are right, they get the coon, when they are wrong, they get the switch.
