Hunt Test Pros And Cons

I PERSONALLY LOVE THE NEW HUNT TEST THAT UKC HAS PROVIDED. THIS GIVES THE HOUNDS A CHANCE TO PROVE THEY ARE A REAL COONDOG OR NOT. NO ONE TO ARGUE WITH OVER WHO STRUCK FIRST OR WHO TREED FIRST, JUST DOWN TO EARTH REAL COON HUNTING AT ITS BEST. HANDLERS DON'T HAVE WORRY ABOUT NOTHING, JUST LET THE HOUNDS DO THE TALKING FOR THEMSELF.

PROS TO THE TEST: REAL COONDOGS GET THE COON TREED BY THEMSELVES WITHOUT ANY HELP!!!

CONS TO THE TEST: ME TOO DOGS CAN'T GET IT DONE BY THEMSELVES WITHOUT ANY HELP!!!

THANK YOU UKC FOR THE HUNT TEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BE HONOST WITH YOUR HOUND AND SELF. ENTER A HUNT TEST AND SEE IF YOUR DOG HAS THE ABILITY OR NOT. UKC WILL AWARD THE REAL COONDOGS IF THEY PASS THE TEST.

ANY QUESTIONS?

If you believe any 1 hour hunt can prove what is a real coondog, then you have purty much given away what you know about judgeing a real coondog.

i personally don't see any cons to it. if i was gonna have a stud dog then i would get him a htx title. i just wish they would have more in my area.

Please enlighten me on exactly what makes a real coondog because apparently since I believe in these hunt test and will participate in them that I need educated.

a dog is evaluated for one hour. During that hour, a dog must meet all of the following requirements on at least one turnout. The dog must go hunting, the dog must open on track (hounds only; cur dogs are not required to be open trailers), the dog must tree and stay treed, and the coon must be seen. That’s it; the most basic elements of a successful coon hunt.

If a dog is not able to complete those standard requirements during the hour, all on the same track, it cannot be passed. In addition, the dog must complete the one hour of hunting time without committing two of the listed faults, which include: off game, slick trees, quitting track, handling issues, leaving or milling around at the tree, and failure to hunt.

If you believe ANYONE can judge what a "real" coondog is in one hour, you are dreaming.

Posted by Pigeon on 08-26-2008 07:43 PM:

Cons
Hides the mean dog
Hides the dog that cant stay treed with something else running
Hate One hour test and night hunts, they should be 2 hrs

hunt test

I think they are for the crybabys who think they get cheated in every cast they participate in, or arent hunting a good enough dog for the nite hunts. Seriously what do these things prove, most dogs can tree a coon by themselves and these just hide the faults like leaving under pressure, an ill dog, and metooers just my opinion, dont mean much

Question

Why, is it nessessary to insult others and there dogs. Giving an opinion is one thing but to insult them or there dogs is uncalled for.

Come on guys, were striving for the same goals..better hounds, that reproduce. I hope

The fact that me too dogs can't pass the hunt test is not a negative knock on the test, only the dog. I can't wait until my dog is ready to be entered in a hunt test, it'll be fun.

these hunt test are alot of fun & they do show a side of a hound that alot of people want to know about. just the fact that anybody that wants to can spectate & can give people that may never get to hunt with a certain dog the opretunity to see this dog in action. its a great way to show your dogs off to the public. gives you a chance to really concentrate on one dogs track mouth, tracking abuility, locate & tree style with out the distraction of other dogs. so much is about how young a pup can start any more this will give you a chance to get your young dogs out in the public with out the worry of what could happen in a night hunt. i constantly hear about what a great young dog some one has & blowing up certain studs but in a week or so its gone never to be heard from again. nobody ever gets to see this dog in the woods. no excuse not to show them off with the hunt test !! thats what i like about these hunts, i like to see a good dog work i dont care what color but i'd rather watch a black dog.

the only con is they must be done honest & you will always have some that will abuse just like any thing else.

i guess for those of you who have me too gr nt champs are just gonna be screwed because it's about the ability to tree coons alone and i'd bet my paycheck over half the big money stud dogs out there can't do it.

I'm not saying it's the total dog , but when I can go out , night after night , tree a coon or two or maybe three , and be home in an hour , then yeah , I'd say I had the kind of coondog I wanted.

I sure wish you'r go on one Jim and come back and give us an honest report on how you did. You might find that you like it. LOL

Just because a dog can tree a coon alone. In no way, form or fasion does that make it a COONDOG! Its a start though.

Jackbob, I do the hunt test thing around 4-7 nights aweek. About every week. Year around. The time in the woods varys and the buddy hunting with me isn't always the same but it's purty much a hunt test every nite.

I'm not at all against those who are into these tests. And I don't have a problem with those who think my dogs are junk because they haven't done it.

Posted by jackbob42 on 08-27-2008 01:32 AM:

Jim - Sounds like we judge our dogs about the same. LOL
But , I don't nite hunt , so does that make my dogs any less of a coondog than yours? I guess that would depend on who we asked , wouldn't it? LOL
I'm not competetive , so my dog doesn't really have to beat anybody elses dog to be a coondog. All he has to do is get struck and treed in a hurry and have the coon when I get there. I don't believe in circle points. And I don't believe all the other excuses.....
" They're just dogs. "
" They're gonna miss sometimes. "
" All dogs have an off night. "
Etc.,etc.,etc.

And for the record , I don't believe your dogs are junk. Never said that and didn't mean for it to sound that way.

Don't you have to pass three tests? Jim I'm sure your dogs aren't junk just because you won't take them to a hunt test, but if you tried you mite find out its a little harder than you mite think to keep a single dog straight for an hour, just think If your hounds pass time after time what kind of bragging rights you would have and don't tell me you don't brag I've read some of your replys on hear.My dogs passes I'll brag and probaly even rub into one or two of my buddies .

lol.... no i work for a local gov. but just lookin at the pass rate, i think it's around 40% so that tells me there is a little more to it than you think. i haven't seen one single dog with an ad in the cb or cooner with the htx title yet so it looks to me like i don't even need a side job
