Dogs left behind at AO

Hey everyone, lets all try to do what you can to prevent dogs from being left behind at AO this year. Ever year there are hounds left tied to fences, or let loose and abandoned. Lets not let this sort of thing ruin our good names and hard earned reputations. All you can do is keep a watchful eye, and get license plate numbers or names if you can. Getting this info to the authorities and the UKC can make a big difference. Good luck every one!

this could be stooped with very little effort if UKC would require all dogs on the premises to have a microchip and document that number.,

Thats a good idea. I have seen dogs left at alot of bigger hunts. St Jude. Winter Classic, Breeder's Showcase, and its just pitiful. IF these kind of folks dont show up because of the microchip then its no real loss. The dogs they are peddling are most likely culls snyway. And from the looks of alot of the dogs, its a wonder the Humane Society and/or PETA hasnt shown up to cause trouble.

You 're right but most of these dog traders never register a dog in their name, so it wouldnt matter much to them to be barred

They should surround the grounds with security, it would do nothing but help!

but, if I sell a dog that is micro-chipped and the new owners don't record the change or the dog passes through several hands and no one records the change either with UKC or the micro-chip company, then I would be blamed and would have no way to verify that the dog was no longer mine.
I agree that it is a crime that anyone would just leave a dog tied there, and they need to be punished.

Maybe UKC should require the seller of a dog to mail the papers in with the new owner's name.

this is a good idea, if you could limit the requirement to the "dog traders".. LOL

yeah, it'd be a pain in the hind-end, but would stop 90% of the shenanigans the "dog traders" pull.....

enroll the dog in the new owners name or better yet get a bill of sale.

Do you rally want to give govt. and other agencies more power over us than they already have? Police ourselves, just like we have always done. I do not like having someone tell me what I can and cant do with a hound. I am telling you guys, you start whining and complaining about the little things and they will fix it to where you cant transport a hound across a county line without a Passport a Visa and a Health Certificate. If you want to put on a hunt with thaousands of people attending then you are going to have to deal with the few low-lifes that abandon dogs, just dont yell and scream too loud or at the wrong people. Can you imagine what it would be like if we all took video of what its like when we knock a coon out to our dogs and then send the footage to our local media? I am just saying lets not get to crazy. The less the general public knows about some of the things that go on in our sport the better.

I am already afraid the neihbors might call the law on me for whippin a hound for barking etc. I can just imagine going to a hunt surrounded by "security". No thanks.

You know, the more "humane " thing to do would be a.22 bullet rather than a dog be abandoned. But did you also know there are people (maybe even some on this board) who would see you in Jail for such things.

I had a doberman micro-chipped & (don't remember exact $$) but it cost around 125 bucks...... granted that was a while back.....

I can't believe the cost has went down that much...... if anything I'd think the cost would go up... everything else has.....

8.00 wouldn't cover the office visit to the animal clinics around here...

MICRO CHIP...

...You can do it yourself! VERY easily!!! V. Cannon can tell you the most inexpensive supplier....He has lots of good info on that sort of stuff!

It is done with a syringe and then you send in the info to register it. Lots of places sell them but I'm pretty sure Mr Cannon can tell you how to get them the cheapest. $125 is REALLY pricey! The ones we've had done at the vet were MUCH cheaper and done when they were in for first exam and shots etc... after we got them.

UKC did a good job last year to prevent many "leftovers". I know there were people who tried to be sure all the dogs had shade and water if the sun had moved or water had gotten dumped over etc... There are people organizing the event who can be told if something looks "suspicious".

Have a Great time there this year everyone and a safe trip! We had surely Planned this trip since last year... But I hurt my back and can't make the long drive

Do the right thing and Happy Hunting! Heather

heckler, so you would charge a hunter 10.00 to enter the grounds with a dog he has entered in the hunt.
