im a walker guy but i have seen some decent improvment in the blue and english dogs from years past. jmo

I am a bluetick man myself, but i am going to say that the Engilsh breed has come a long way in the last five years, and the Walker breed has been going flatline for a few years. Most, not all, but most of the high name Walker studs show the same 4 to 6 dogs in the 3 gen pedigree, and thus showing traits that are less than great. JMO

I am a walker person, but I would say that the Black and Tan has come a long way... being the fact that the long ears are almost bred out of them.

no its not just a n.y thing. im in ohio and i have to say english dogs are catching fire and some of the dogs coming up right now are gonna be hell on wheels. the walkers ive seen recently resemble the walkers of years gone by. not much improvement but they're staying the same. i havent been out with many blue dogs recently but the ones i have been out with are sure enough coon dogs.

Walkers and English

Based on my number I received from the UKC, Walkers have dominated for at least 30 years in comparing how many there are to the number of hunting degrees they received. The English breed has consistently improved their percentages, but at a much milder rate. Hunting degrees may not be the best measurement of a dog, but it's as close as we get unless we each hunt them ourselves.

I had always seen nice English dogs in this part of the country, but it seemed like i never saw a good young one. Dont know if they started slow or just werent brought to town until they were older. Rolling Rock changed all that. Mr. Wade Pardue from Columbus, MS was constantly bringing out NICE young dog off Rock to the hunts. I am in no way saying that Rock changed the breed. Just changed my perception of the breed.

Im going to have to go with Walkers they dominate everything as for them going down hill how could anyone make that assumption when all of last years world champions were walkers. I think all the other breeds are going down hill look at all the hunts, world champions, and dogs being advertised, you see less and less of all the other breeds and more and more walkers. I mean shoot walkers are so dominant that we now are following different strans of walkers its like the breed has breeds within itself you got wipeout dogs, coma dogs, sunrise dogs, team trackman, nailor dogs, lipper dogs, and I could go on and on people may want to think the walkers are going down hill but the proof shows otherwise.

Five years????? I doubt any breed can be changed significantly in just 5 years. My guess is if you look at hunt results, compareing numbers per breed to wins per breed at any of the major events, you would find no real difference in the numbers between now and 5 years ago.

Posted by Josh Davidson on 08-21-2008 05:03 PM:

we are not talking about hunt results we are talking about breed quality just cause dogs win hunts doesn't by anymeans make them a good dog let alone a coon dog i could name you at least 10 known stud dogs that i have personally hunted with that couldn't tree a coon in the wild un less it was just a popup coon right in front of them now somewhere along the lines that dog was made grnitech that doesn't make it a coondog maybe it wasn't even hunted to earn that title it happens

Leopard Hounds made the most improvement. They went from something most people didn't know existed, to a recoginized coonhound breed. Thats a big step forward.

As far as the other breeds, any statement is either just an opinion or depends on "selective facts" to make a point and therefore means little to nothing. jmo.

I will let you know if I see a off breed that has improved. I see a good dog here and there, can't give credit to the whole breed.

walkers have won the last 8 pkc world hunts and I cant remember when something else has won world hunts in any other regisry. akc requires coons to be seen to win any hunt. As for the grand nites yeah Ive seen several grand nites that could never tree coons. That dont mean none of them can. as for now the only way that we can compare breeds is by whos winning and who isn't I mean how else can you is anyone going to go out and hunt with every dog accross the states to see who is better. I doubt that so untill that happens we have to go by the wins so Walkers then as of now and the last 20 or so years have been the dominant dog. I guess thats why some people hate them its always been a popular thing to hate the best. Like when the Lakers were winning everything soon people got tired of it and didnt like them anymore. As for me and my wallet I know to buy a walker I can find a good one easier than anything else.

If I swapped FROM THE WALKERS..I would go english...Not that I think they have improved in the last 5 years..Like Jim says..5 years aint long enough to see a big improvement..What I've saw the last 5 years.Walker dogs winning almost anything and everything..I dont think any breed has went down hill in 5 yrs either.

LOL I guess I love the walkers this is my last word though on this subject true 5 yrs cant really be a good time line for this. Also the only way we can measure from breed to breed is in the hunts. So with that said UKC top 10 historical reproducers from all breeds other than walkers have produced 2161 nite champions and grand nite champions ( the lowest of all these were plotts, then redbones, then Bluetick, then Black and tan, and english produced the most Leopards havent made the number to make this list yet) the top ten walkers which include the likes of sackett jr, rat attack (who is the #1 reprducing dog of all time) Nailor and h.n. harry have produced 2687 nite champions and grand nite champions nuff said I guess.

Good point mkidd. Despite all it's limitations, I will take hunt results over opinion any day of the week.
