Bench Show Questions

How long dose a dog need to hold its position on a bench.

Other than doing it over and over is there any tricks to getting them to stand longer.

thanks

I show my dogs just for the fun of it, so I really can't tell you much but to just practice daily. If you figure out any tricks on how to get them to stand longer, you let me know!

I am by far no pro at showing. But my advice is just work them a couple times a day for short periods of time. I have only been to smaller shows but so far they have never had to stand for longer than 3 or 4 minutes. A couple things I have learned in my short showing time is practice there gating just as much as standing them on the bench. That is a big thing and it is embarassing when the dog is jumping all around. Trust me I know!! Also dont trim there nails the day before a show. The dog will not stand the same. I had that happen to and it took a week to get here back to normal. Good luck!!

unfortunately, as long as it takes the judge to make a decision. practice, practice, practice. its easier if you have a smart dog to begin with and one that minds. good luck.

you can trim, but t-r-i-m is the word, not cut off an inch because you're going in the ring in 10 min. if you keep the nails consistently at a good length, then a little tipping off wont hurt.

the trick is to have a dog that meets its breed standard not one that stands still forever.
but it does help if that dog does behave well. practice the gaiting also. have someone watch while you gait the dog to see at what pace the dog gaits the best to show his movement. i have one dog that i have to jog with to show his gait.
don't overdo the practice on the bench. some dogs become bored with it and won't enjoy showing. know your dog and bond with him/her. this will also help you.
good luck. showing can be fun.

I had a elderly gentelman not to long ago sum it up best

If you want to compete...practice

If you want to win...practice some more
