?stuff for shiny coats at bench show

my question is what is the stuff I have seen people using at bench shows on their dogs coat? I have tried show sheen and satin sheen. I saw some folks spray something on a cloth and then rub it on the coat??

coats

I am not sure what specific stuff you are talking about but I can tell you waht a lot of professional handlers in AKC conformation shows do.

1- make sure the dog is bathed really well with a good quality shampoo. For our English Setter Champions we us human shampoo (Pantene)
2- after the dog is very well rinsed apply a conditioner (check the label and make sure it is one that adds moisture to the hair), let it sit on the dog for five minutes before rinsing it off (Panteen)
3- a mixture of 75% water and 25% listerene in a spray bottle then just before ring time (15-30 min) using a fine mist spray it on the coat and wipe down with a hound glove or cloth

The one thing to remember though is that most of the coat "shine" comes from within and is based on feed and being parasite free as well as being clean not just bathed the day of a show.

Nothing NECESSARY to apply

Good quality food and regular parasite prevention programs are essential. I DO carry a spray can of pleasant smelling spray disenfectant, spray it on a folded up terry towel & wipe them down just before showing if needed. This takes of any collected dust or debris and it evaporates immediately. I use a quality dog or horse shampoo, depending upon the individual dogs and their coat color or type.

I try to keep my female as clean as possible and a few minutes before the show I spray Lemon Pledge on a rag and wipe her down with it. Works good for me.

I use a moisturizing baby bath. (Johnson & Johnson, Aveno or Baby Magic). It cleans and conditions the coat and makes the Redbones shine like a new copper penny !! And I don't have to worry about getting soap in their eyes...

On long road trips that lead to a long weekend of events and a bath is not always possible before a show, I use a waterless shampoo spray. You just spray it on and rub it in. Afterwards I also use a product from Biologe' (?). It is a gloss serium for frizzy hair..The ladies will know what I am talking about...I think it is a little pricey and can only be bought at beauty salons. Sam makes it and the baby wash at his work and keeps me stocked up with it... ...That's it...Simple no fuss cleaning routine. Some of the dogs love it, most would just rather go get dirty...

i don't know about old wives tales or afro-sheen but what i do know is if you give your dog a can of jack mackerel every other day along with their food you don'tneed any of that other mess. i've got a 4 mo. old jet black female pit and she shines like a star on a night w/o a moon and it is pitch black dark outside!!!!

We've always used raw eggs during show season. Give two every other day with their feed and then just a normal bath and conditioner before showing.

The eggs being so high in protein are also very good for their feet, dogs with loose feet will show improvement after eating eggs for a few weeks.

Like any raw food though, you must handle them properly. Refrigerate before use, give them cold and if the dog doesn't eat them immediantly, then remove them. Leaving raw egg in your dogs bowl will make them sick, especially in the heat.

Kelp and alfalfa powder sprinkled on the food also helps. It's just more costly.

Only spray we have ever used on them is a dog spray conditioner (it smells good. LOL) and horse Show Sheen.
