Question About Fly Preditors!! Anyone Know???

I am curious about Fly Preditors... I am thinking about getting some and tring them around our dogs but just curious on if it will affect the outcome with us having cement spray outs with the dogs??? Do they have to be on dirty??? Also do you have to keep buying them monthly??? Just would like some information about them from people that has used and are using them now... Any information would be appreicated..

We tried them this year.. They send out a new bunch about once a month. I'm not impressed with how they have worked so far.

I've used them.
I don't think that they have to be on dirt. They fly around, after all.
You have to keep putting them out because they only live for so long. I am assuming that they don't reproduce quickly enough to replace themselves. I don't really remember, it's been a while since I used them.
Also, seems I remember that control of flies is better if you start them early in the season.
The farm I worked on had like a subscription or fruit of the month club deal with the company. They arrived in a little brown paper bag every 30 days or so.
Seemed to control the flies to some degree around the horses.
Honestly, I'd buy one of those big stinky fly trap jars if it were me.

If your looking for quick results then go with the jar traps. The fly predators take a few months to make a big dent since they are interuprting the breeding cycle. they work best in somewhat damp areas or manure piles since they target fly pupa not the adult flies. I started using them last year but my trip to Iraq interrupted the cycle.(my Mother in Law didn't open the new packages so I had a few boxes of dead flies when I got home).

i tried them but where i live ants are bad they will tell you if you have ants they will kill them and if you poison the ants you kill the fly predaters also.

I've used them for 2 or 3 yrs now. It took a while to notice a dent as mentioned above. when you order, it is recommended that you order before your fly season begins. Here the season runs from March-October. If you preorder the entire season, you get an extra pack (they will send a double pack). You can be billed monthly or all at once.

If your delivery site is a mailbox in the sun in the summer, they will tell you they will probably die unless you are present when the mail runs, so mine are delivered to work. I had some trouble in the beginning with packs being opened when delivered or the eggs not hatching and each time I was compensated with a replacement pack. They are very good to work with.

I still have some, but no where as many as I did prior to starting. I have 5-6 dogs and 5000/month is what I am sent. They will email you a shipping schedule so you know exactly when they are coming. Mine are shipped on a Tuesday and I have them by Thursday/Friday in NC. They are shipped from California so depends on where you live when you will get them. Sometimes if they end up sitting in the delivery truck over the weekend or a holiday, you may have some dead ones.

If you get them and the weather is not cooperating with you or whatever, you can put them in the fridge and that will stop the hatching cycle until they warm up again. I have gotten them and it would rain here for 3-4 days straight, so I would leave them in the fridge until I knew I'd be able to put them out and they would all hatch and then out they would go.

Its worth a try, but dont expect big results the first year. YOu will have to do it for a couple to really see the benefits. Also living next to woods, near other farm animals, etc will cause increased flies in your area, since they can fly several miles from where they live to eat.

good luck, hope you enjoy them. BTW, they come in a pack with some sawdust and look like rat poop, then when they hatch they look like gnats.

oh yea, if you put out other pesticides or lime to control insects and flies, that will kill the predators. I was using lime over my manure and had to stop that, but after they starting working, did not notice an increase in the flies. Also, you can put them out on the manure, under trees with mulching leaves, these guys will fly 100-150 yds from where they are scattered.
