Genetics Question & Bench Show Question
Does anyone know weather crooked tails are recessive or dominate on the beagle blood lines; you know pups with kinks in their tails. And since there is nothing in the beagle guidelines about weather or not a tail can have a kink in it, should a dog be counted down for a crooked tail? And if you have an adult that does have an injury to it’s tail could you still show it with a letter from a vet stating that is was injured in an accident and the tail not be counted … I know you can do this in AKC; had a dog once that was kick in mouth while herding cattle and we still showed him with no teeth.
I know these are pretty much two different questions but they are what I have on my mind. Scary thought yea?
My guess from what I have seen in coonhounds ,Kink tails is a recessive gene.
Kinked tails is a recessive gene, will show up when both parents have that gene in their ancestors.
As for injuries as long as you have a certification from a vet stating the injury and notify the judge prior to finding the fault/injury you should be ok. As for a kink in the tail, the tail is only worth 5 points, if your dog looses just because of a kink in the tail, he obviously has more faults then that or the dog that won is a better dog conformation wise.
Ask the judge what he/she seen that deducted points from your dog, maybe you aren't seeing what others see. Sometimes the owners can't see their own dogs faults, and is a good thing to have another set of eyes to tell you faults you don't see so that when you do breedings you can look for a dog that can complement your dog or strengthen your dogs areas that need work and look for same faults that is in the other dog so you don't repeat a mistake and perpetuate a fault you want to get rid of.
