To much tree?
Years ago when I started following hounds, it seemed young dogs took for ever to start treeing. getting them to hunt and track was not a problem. Today it seems vise versa to much tree not enough hunting tracking ability. Do you think it was the over breeding of the Walkers or a particular line of a walker that produced so much tree ?
Been there, done that.......You couldent pay me to hunt the hounds I hunted 20 years ago......

i think it is because of the breeding for quicker tree dogs and hot nosed hounds is the reason............some pups just have all the nose bred out of them.............
A buddy hunted in a 1 hour this past week. They made 5 trees in the hunt all were slick, they had 5minutes left in the cast ,cut the dogs all dogs got struck and tree on a another slick. Boys I think thats just little to much treeing for me.
Na, it's not too much treeing, it's not enough culling. The reason they bred for the tree is because that's where it all ends. If a coondog don't get treed and stay, it's worthless. It can be hotnosed, it can be silent and you will still see coons. But if it don't tree you are piss'in inta tha wind.

very few people breed for track dogs anymore.
they want total loners that get in the country and tree easy coon.
i love to see a cast of dogs pack up like they used to and show which one can realy run a track. Folks realized that it was easier to breed for and whip dogs into not trying to compete on the same coon than it was to breed a better/faster track dog.
im not against dogs getting split up but its almost impossible to know what kind of track dog they are if they never compete against each other on the same coon.

I'd rather have have one that's loose on the tree and a good track dog than a dang tree happy dumb dog! I'd rather have a hound with a good nose that's deadly accurate rather than one that looks good on every tree in the woods.

a dog that learns to track before tree will tree lots of coons after a season under him.

track hound
ill beat you all night with your get treed everytree he or she treedog mines going past yours and moveing own when you get to him he will have the meat and youll be still looking and hopeing knowing hes a liar.I like my dogs honest just like people that i deal with if not im not haveing it.PR HANSLEYS MR. TRAIN OFF MR.CLEAN IS WHAT IM HUNTING HAVENT BEEN TO A SLICK TREE NONE THE TREE THAT IVE BEEN TO HAD A COON IN IT 8 MONTHS OLD.IF YOUR DOG TREES SLICK MINES GONNA MAKE YOU SICK.
Dogs are more tree minded now a days, but that's okay to me. EVERY DOG IS GOING TO SLICK, if they haven't yet (At 9-14 months old or how ever old) THEY WILL.
IMO People put to much emphasis on treeing at a young age, with over tree training, to many drags, hissing, petting, and sight treeing by hanging coon tails, bologna or whatever LOL! They are born with the natural instinct to lookup and tree, and should develop that trait naturally, so the more you pet them up for treeing the more their going to do it.
I also beleive that dogs should be punished everytime they PULL UP SHORT! I've seen alot of people go into their dog who is empty and just pull them off without punishing them! I feel that they should be whipped, and sent on, to finish the track. The more you let a dog get away with something, the harder it will be to break them from it.

A veteran local coonhunter told me.
I spent my first 30 years chasing and kicking these dogs a$$ to get on the tree. Spent the last 20 kicking dogs a$$ off trees.
Pretty much tells the story.
They were track dogs first, then bred for years now to be tree
dogs.
Another veteran says. You plant taters you'll get taters.

I've allways said that "if you have a REAL treedog thats gets treed quick, thier gonna miss every once in a while." However a guys not gonna win alot with a slick treeing idiot either. They still have to be accurate.
If someone told me that thier dog never misses, then I garantee in most cases thier not a 1st tree type of dog unless they are getting split everytime. In my mind keeping everything you want in a dog is a balancing act of traits. I want a dog that looks for a track on a dead run with its head up looking to wind, that can drift a track and move it with speed. Too much nose is a problem and not enough is a problem as well. They have to have brains 1st and foremost. I look for my hounds to run track with a bawl mouth, have a good locate and go into a steady chop and stay put till I get there. A quick, accurate treedog is a priority for success no matter how they run track though.
If all these things sound too good to be true in one dog I'd be happy to show anyone a dog that fits this description to a tee and he's a reddog to boot.
From what I've seen dogs like this exist in all the breeds. A guy just has to find that line thats mantained balance and accuracy in thier hounds. As for my breed, the redbones are on the rise again. Mark my words. Lots of big moves being made in the breed to lineup dogs like I'm talking about here. Dogs that will win. We just need more top handlers.
