Dodge Dakota Vs. Horse - Totaled or Not?? Your Thoughts
Lucky everyone came out with minor injuries except the horse.. You would expect the truck to have major damage since the horse was about 1200lbs and was hit going 55-60mph... Air bags never did deploy... The insurance company should be here in the next couple of days is what they said and we are just wondering what everyone else thinks to... Do you think the insurance is going to call the truck totaled or have it fixed???

Can you tell if the frame is bent?
No you really can not tell... I know if you could it would defently be totaled... To me it looked like the motor was pushed up.. Wonder if that would mean that the frame is bent??? Or maybe just the motor brackets just broke...

The motor being pushed back is what made me vote for it being totalled. I think all it takes is 40% of the value in damages and it is considered totalled.
Depending on what you want them to do with the truck, I'd say if your nice to him (the adjuster) you might be able to help him decide. Its probably going to be close either way.
Truthfully I kind of hope they total it because I just don't see how it woud ever drive right if they do fix it... We have never had to claim on insurance before so this is probably going to be another lesson learned for us... Have heard that if they total the truck you could buy it back cheap... Anyone know if this is true???

it may depend on the insurance company, but when i totaled my car we were offered to buy it back, and it was cheap. that was through allied insurance (which is a great insurance company...) our adjuster worked to get the car totaled cause i wanted it totaled and with damages like that i think they are hesitant to say to fix it, knowing that the bill may ring up real quick once the work starts to be done when they run into a bent frame, hidden damage, etc..
Hi i run a collision shop, wheather your truck is totaled depends on several things. 1 age of your truck as opposed to cost of repair.2Also depends on your insurance co. some will call for used parts some will not, again that usually depends on the age of your vehicle. The best thing you can do is get your truck hauled to a shop you trust before the appraiser looks at it,they will represent you with the insurance appraiser. Your insurance should pay for the tow. important thing to remember is the appraiser represents the insurance co.not you. Also check your pollicy you might be entitled to a rental while your truck is laid up. Good luck and glad no one was hurt. John
John is right they will probably put used parts on it. There would be minor frame damage if any. There are quaility shops out there that can fix it if thats what you decide to do. It will drive fine. Good luck
Was the horse totaled LOL
That truck is not totalled (in reality)*. I could have the body work and paint done in a day. If the frame is tweaked a little, the frame shop and front end guy I use would have it driving better than the day it rolled off the showroom floor.
*Another thing, though- alot of insurance adjusters are, or know someone that is a rebuilder. I've seen alot of vehicles that weren't that badly hurt that get totalled so the adjuster or a friend can buy it cheap and fix it and sell it.
Thank God For CarFax. LOL

I hit a cow with a friend's truck and did less damage than that and they totaled his. It was an older truck though.

Really do appreicate all the response...
BRYAN J - The truck is an 02 with a little over 100,000 just rolled over a couple weeks ago... I am going to say yes it did have an electric fan module.. It did push the whole front quarter panels into the front tires and they are touching the wheels..
Plott - The horse is doing great Running & Bucking around the pasture in heaven...
john Duemmer - Our insurance has so far been really helpful but it isn't over yet.. They said that the tow and medical bills are covered so far... Tring to get ahold of the horse owner and all of a sudden he is no where to be found.. But they did say either way they will take care of the truck.. We have American Family Insurance
elvis - Why slow down in the pasture... Takes the fun out of it.. LOL party pooper!!
If they fix it or total it we are going to keep it probably...

Your choice, you can take the money too and sell it if you own it free and clear.
Most or all insurances will get used parts or aftermarket. I would rather use used parts the aftermarket. Aftermarket stuff sure isn't of same quality as factory. Although its better now then ever still not as good. But its guaranteed as long as you own the vehicle.
Maybe after a complete tear down they will find more damages and then be able to total. As someone said too rental expense will add on too. In Iowa if the repairs are over 50% of the vehicle value you will need to disclose this at the time of sell. This reduces the overall value of the vehicle too. I have heard anywhere between 20 to 30%.
Only 1 company I know of that has an endorsement to use factory parts if they are beyond repair. Thats Nationwide-Allied Insurance.
Called the oem endorsement, not much cost either.
Only one company that won't use aftermart sheet metal too State farm. Coolers yes and reman bumper fascias. Will use aftermarket chrome bumpers. Now this is the state of Iowa. Not sure if its nationwide. Im pretty sure it is though.
Am/Fam is a good insurance company. I write estimates for them too, State Farm, ALLied-Nationwide,Farm Bureau, Liberty Mutual, and a drop off for Progressive customers.
Busy body shop at a GM dealership in southern Iowa. We have a Chief EZ liner II frame machine with the Lazor measuring system. Nice add on to our shop. Nice Blowtherm down draft smart cure booth. We use Dupont coatings. Nice stuff.
Name of the game though take care of the customer!
Truck sure looks repairable though. Someone said one day, thats doing an amazing fast job.
Id be careful with bent motor mounts, would cause vibrations.
Sorry for ramblin.

Insurance Companies
They don't total automobiles like they use too.I have seen worse than that and they fixed it.The only way they will total that truck,is if the frame is bent really bad.But then again, you never know.Glad no one was killed! Take care.
You can negotiate with insurance companies. I had a car totalled and they only wanted to give me $800 for it. They ended up giving me $2000 + $10,000 in medical before I was done with them.
Also make sure YOU take it somewhere you are comfortable repairing it. The insurance company has absolutely no say in who repairs the vehicle.

Dane the Insurance compaines do have the right to inform you of there prefered shops. The owner does have a choice on who repairs it. Thats correct. But they try and sell the DRP shops because of all the guarantees that come with a DRP body shop. We are a DRP shop for all the major insurance companies.
I really like it. But you have to work your rear off and make everyone completely satisfied.
