-- Mistake or not (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=217141)
Mistake or not
i hit the pup 2-3 times with the tri-tronics
for barking, then took him over later to a caged coon
should i have took the collar off?this was the first time
he had seen a coon.the hair on his back stood up but
never barked at it and i didnt pet him up any.
your collar had nothing to do with it. your pup just isnt ready to fire up on a coon yet.

If you took him right over shortly after , yeah it probably affected him.
If you take the collar off and then let him bark at a coon , he's gonna get " collar wise ".
Work on one thing at a time.

I agree with burdette that your dogs reaction more than likely means he's just not ready yet. I also agree with jackbob42 about the danger of making him collar wise and in trying to train a dog too many things at once.
Working on 2 issues at the same time leads to confusion in a young dog, especially when those 2 things can seem contradictory ( like, " I want you to bark"...."I don't want you to bark"). It's not a big mistake but a mistake none the less. I'm sure you didn't do him any real harm. But these kinds of mistakes can have a cumulative effect, and over time a dog can lose trust in you and lose confidence in himself.
I value a self confident hound that when it's finished out is hunting on pure instinct. We don't teach them to do that but we can short circuit it by cluttering their heads with confusing training.
quote:this is very true. you need to work on one thing at a time. because you might be confuseing him. people think the shocking collar will break ever thing at once (wrong). work on one thing at a time.take the shocking collar off the next time you show him a coon you probley confuse him and he was afraid to bark at the coon.

Youre not doing anything wrong. if you put him in on it with an older good coondog you'll have him into a coonhound in time.

I would recomend using a dummy collar also.

you should only work on your dog with one thing at a time dog can not understand why there getting disiplened if you do it for several different things......i may have affected him it may not have he may not be ready yet.......but fact of the matter is that if you are gonna use it on him... he has gotta learn how to hunt with it on... my advice to you is and i have been doing this 20 years... don't shock him for barking... cut you a switch and let him know verbally..b/f you whip him.. ex... shut up.. once if he doesn't stop shut up.. hollar again the third time scold and so on till he gets the picture...if the dog is young carry him hunting run the collar one him if he isn't stated good let him fun what ever he wants deer, diller, possum, althouhg i know you want him t tree a coon running off game is usually starts as a sight race , then your dog learns how to trail and open on track... do not shock him for this but meanwill be showing him coon in the yard cuttin them loose b/c your main objective is to tree a coon.. wen he get to were he can run and tree well.. then start breaking him off of the trash... by doing this you are killing 3 bird with one stone..... you are teaching you dog to go hunting and run something, teaching him that barking on track is not a problem.. and wen he is started well you begin to break from the things you allowed him to run...you cant break it if they don't do it.. some people will not agree with this but this is the best way to teach and break your dog... wen you get to the point were you are reay to break him off the off game to it personally it is much better there will be much better results... the only thing i shock my dog for is when i call him in the wood and he doesn't come here......your dog will try to please you and you let heim know what pleases you...make sure you show him coons they got to know what yoou want them to do...send him with older better dogs to get him started also..then win he is started start careing him by himself... only work on one thing at a time... if you do to much a once it confusess dogs.. good luck with your pup..

burdette have givin you good advice..
little mistake like this isw wat ruins dogs over time you did the right thing by asking but you know how to fix it..now..but he also my may not be ready ... my question is how old is your pup although dogs start at different ages.. i told you have do work him in general and didn't really adress the situation... but
read wat bill ziegler posted that is very well put together and is excellent advice.....
just keep working him and pet him while working him with a coon verbalise and praise him.... you are the # 1 confidence builder in your dog.. but also let a older dog see the coon also at the same time maybe that will help him seeing another dog and you praiseing him.. and he may kinda comealong thin... but natural insticnt should come in soon..

just take off the collar, show him the coon, then let it go. don't worry if he don't tree the first few. keep doing that. Don't waste two years off your life wondering if dog is going to make it or not.
Thats true philip if ya dont know anything about the dogs parentage..and its not a Walker..you might be wasting your life...some GRNT stud dogs didnt do squat till they were 5 yrs old. but the folks knew the line of dogs..knew he hunted and had patience...and he was a walker. Houses Lipper dog.

the dogs cant tell the difference between a tracking collar and a shock collar. i think that the reason that he didn't bark is because he didnt't know what to do. take an older more experienced dog up to the coon with the pup, that way the pup sees what he is supposed to do. when he sees another dog doing that the peer pressure will get to him and he will sart barking at the coon. when he starts barking at it get him up on the tree and love him up on the tree. if this doesn't work then i don't think the dog is ready to go hunting.
