-- why walkers? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=217109)

Posted by bricklayer on 07-04-2008 11:07 PM:

why walkers?

I have noticed that walkers seem to dominate the nite hunts. I was just wondering why? I have raised coonhounds for almost 30 years now and have owened every breed with the exception of plotts and english. I have always prefered redbones though I have owned good dogs that were walkers, black and tans and blueticks. I have found there to be good dogs in every breed and among the better ones I owned there wasn,t a nickles worth of diffrence, they were all outstanding. The only real consistant diffrence I can see is the walkers tend to be on average a bit deeper hunting dogs. though exceptions are found within every breed. But night in and night out all treed coon equally well. I have never entered a nite hunt in my life, though I am now wanting to get into competition hunting. Am I missing something here? If treeing coon is the name of the game, why do walkers dominate when other breeds seem to do just fine?

Walkers were the 1st coonhound breed. they dominated the coondog breed 100+ years ago and the population hasnt gone down. over the years the breed has improved and more big rig coonhunters want the best.

Lester Nance founded the Walker breed by buying up foxhounds that naturally fell out of races to tree coon .... he was putting some awful good genetics in the Walker breed from the start.

All the other breeds worry more about color and looks , natural ability in the very root of the foundation tree wasn't up there where Walkers were ..... from there , how could the Walkers do anything but gain steam ?

The walker breed was started in the mid 1800's by a man named George Washington Maupin and Hiram Walker his foundation stud was a Black and Tan named Tennesee Lead,Mr Lester Nance done a lot for the Walker breed but this was 100 years later, mid 1950's.Do a google search on walker history and you will find my information too be rite.

Walkers were a part of the English breed till the early 40,s then got thier own register as walkers treeing,,then later changed too what we know today as the Treeing Walker. And i'm sure my info is correct,,google it and find out,,i am presently studying the history of each breed.

Running Walkers and Treeing Walkers are not the same breed , lol .... I grew up listening too Goodmans , Walkers and all kinds of other running hounds ... but , coonhounds are a different kind of hound .

No , your information is not right.
Read the sign. Lead was the foundation sire of the Walker FOXHOUND.
Originally , Walkers were a strain/line of foxhounds. Just like the Trigg's and the Goodman's. They were just strains/lines.
Lester Nance's White River King was the first ever Registered Treeing Walker COONHOUND.

Heres the link,,it states TREEING WALKER COONHOUND Its funny Thomas Hiram Walker is who the breed is named for, not treeing nances

Except for the Plott coonhound all coonhound breeds in America can trace their ancestry back to foxhounds brought to America from England in colonial times. It is thought that the first foxhounds ever brought to America arrived in 1650 by a man of the name of Robert Brooke.

" History of the Treeing Walker Coonhound Breed
The development of the Treeing Walker Coonhound is credited to Thomas Walker and George Washington Maupin. The history of most coonhounds recognized by the UKC is deeply rooted in the lineage of the dogs imported by these two men. Thomas Walker of Albemarle County, Virginia imported the English foxhound to Virginia in 1742. George Washington Maupin, from Kentucky, also imported several hounds from England in 1770. These dogs became the foundation for the Virginia hounds that were developed into the Walker hound. Sometime in the 1800s, the lineage of the Walker hound split from the ancestry they share with other coonhounds, when “Tennessee Lead” was crossed into the Walker Hound breed. Tennessee Lead was a stolen dog from Tennessee of unknown origin. Lead was a powerful dog with excellent drive, speed, and hunting skills. He didn’t look like the Virginia strain of English foxhounds either, notably different was his clear, short mouth. Initially registered with the UKC as part of the English coonhound breed, the Walkers were registered of their own right in 1945, first as Walkers (Treeing) and later as Treeing Walkers. The Treeing Walker breed excels in its ability to run and tree game. Some Treeing Walkers can literally climb the tree after its prey, however it can be trained to simply howl to let its owner know that the prey is cornered. "

Well , let's see.........
It says Thomas Walker imported foxhounds from England in 1742. And then the sign says it was 1852 ( 90 years later ) when Lead ( a black & tan hound ) was stolen out of a " deer chase " ( running dog ) and sold to Maupin.
So , the way I figure it , Walker was at least 18 when he imported the hounds from England , so that would have made him at least 108 years old when Lead became the foundation sire. Possibly still alive , but not likely , so I don't see how he could have had anything to do with developing these hounds into coonhounds.
It wasn't until Lester Nance and friends started breeding them running dogs ( in the 1930's ) into tree dogs and for the the tri-color , that you see today , that they were developed into the Treeing Walker coonhound of today.
And it was Lester Nance who first got them registered as " Treeing Walkers " with the Full Cry Kennel Club. UKC didn't register them as such until 1978.
If they were coonhounds in the 1700 & 1800's , why were they still called " foxhounds " in the 1930's?

" Some Treeing Walkers can literally climb the tree after its prey, however it can be trained to simply howl to let its owner know that the prey is cornered. "

I've never see a walker dog that could climb any better than any of the other breeds , so this statement has me wondering about the author and just how much he really knew ! LOL
