beginner coonhunter
Hello, I am a new coonhunter, my husband and son and I are excited to get started. I started turkey hunting this past spring and loved it. I know I am going to love coonhunting too. We have 2 blueticks,am 8 month old oldfashioned and I just got a 1 year old female with all grand nite pedigree. We are trying to train them an dwant to get them started in some nite hunts and shows. We are looking for advice and tips as we do not know all the rules etc. For example on a hunt will someone advise me as to what to do with my dog or will I just have to hope for the best? We have trapped coons and let them bark an dthen drag cage through yard an dlet them find the coon. Just not sure how much to do at this point?? We live in North Carolina and plan on breeding our dogs later on. Thanks, D. Short
What part of N.C. are you from?

in my opinion
i would hunt the hair off of them before i'd worry about any night hunts. u need to know ur dogs like the back of ur hand. alot of young dogs are ruined because they are threw in hunts when they start barking up. me, i want a dog that is consitantly treeing coons by itself before i go hunt him in a hunt.
once ur dogs have reached this point, get u a rule book and know it from front to back, then get u some scorecards and some friends and have a some hunts for the fun of it.

I agree with nathan. Hunt em hard, and get to know em first. Also, READ the rulebooks for the nite hunts and bench shows. Good Luck with your dogs and happy hunting. I also live in NC, hopefully we'll see ya at a hunt one day!
Just take your time. I like to show my dogs when their young and wait until they are consistant to put them in the hunts. As far as shows go I would build a stand to work them on. Don't make it too sturdy as half the ones that clubs have are lightweight and rock a little bit.
You can tag along at night hunts as a spectator and watch how things are done. Most cast welcome this and will be more than happy to answer questions.

Thanks so much to all who replied! Where do I rulebook and scorecards? I was hoping we could go along and watch a few hunts so we can get a better idea. Thanks, again.

you can look at a UKC rule book and score card off the the main UKC website I believe. But I know you can order a UKC rule book from UKC. a local club or Master of Hounds may give you a blank scorecard. What part of NC are you located?
my suggestion would be, DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT!! tell ANYONE, besides your family, what your dog sounds like.
and if you 2nd guess that its your dog, or that its treed (or struck) dont call it untill your gut feels right...
pretty much, just always follow your gut! and everything will be okay, and dont get discouraged if you dont win the first few hunts, it takes a bit to get used to the swing of things.
just wanted to give you tips on the problems i had, im only 16 and dont hunt much, also trying to train a pup. let me know how the first few go if you could.
Lizz
p.s. good luck, and most of all have fun.

Im in NC and hunt in several of the hunts closer to me what part of NC are you? If you like I know several people that wouldnt mind you and your husband going along on a comp. hunt. Good luck with your new young hounds. I also hunt blueticks maybe we can get together and do alittle pleasure hunting.

HUNTER'S PRIDE KENNELS
Hey everyone! I am so happy to get all the responses and advice. I had hoped to get to meet a lot of nice coonhunting folks who would not mind helping out a newcomer!! Maybe one day I will be giving out advice. We are already having lots of fun. It is hard work training 2 dogs. Our "puppy" already weighs 70 pounds and feels like holding back a mule!! My female is pretty strong too,she gives Big Chief a run for his money when they are playing. How often do most of you practice on a bench with your dogs? We live in Burke County. Thanks, Dana

You should practice on the bench 15 minutes everyday. I usually do right after feeding time.
