Starting Out
Just wondering how some of you guys started your pups on bear when you were first starting out, did you take them with friends who had bear dogs or did u just turn them out on a hot track and hope for the best? the reason i ask is i really want to get into bear hunting, i have 2 dogs, one is 2.5 yrs old and runs coyotes real good and she ran a bear once by accident last year. and the other is 10 m/o and i got him from Chad Barth. there seems to be getting more and more bears around here, there never was any really, i want to start running them but i don't know anyone who i can tag along with, it might just be trial and error with myself and my best friend who unfortunately has English dogs lol jk he has great dogs but doesn't want to try them on bear lol he says coon only. any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Drag some roads in the evening , then find some tracks in the morning and put the dogs on them. You might have to talk them into it , but it'll work.

Starting Bear Dogs
If you can the best thing to do is to go with someone else who has bear dogs,But you can also try to start them yourself, its a hard way to go but it will be worth it when you tree the first one by yourself.Just find a fresh track and let them go.If you can put out some baits and start them that way,you might want to put a trail camera on them to make sure your putting them on a bear or rake the dirt around the baits.GOOD LUCK.

the trail camera works great then you know your not putting on a 60 to 80 lb. track star the first few times your out

cut them loose
thanks for the help guys, my friend and i have got a couple patterned, thers a sow and cub behind his place and there was a nice big boar across the road, all places we can hunt, and there seems to be some pretty decent activity around a shallow muddy lake buy his place that is sourrounded with lots and lots and lots of swamp, hopefully we can dump a couple dogs on a track and see what happens, he also has a trap line a couple hours north, lots of bear filled islands that we might try, atleast if its on a 60 acre island its a pretty controlled environment and if they swim well we can always catch the dogs with the boat. Unfortunately i cant legally run them until sept. Hopefully i can find a track around here and just lead them on it a ways.

Hey
Just wondered where ya were from. Im in the belleville area and do a good bit of coonhuntin with my bluticks in the area. Gettin to be lots of bear around in the corn feilds. My old dog I had died a year ago but he would run a bear once in a while if he bumped into one. A few years back he treed 3 in one season at night out of the corn feilds.
Anyways, not many tree hound people in the area and Im always lookin to meet some so I thought Id drop ya a line. Thanks
hey luke, i live between Peterborough and Lindsay, i live on the west side of Omemee. the Pigeon river is only 2 minutes from my house, and there is starting to be a few bear around here but nothing too drastic...yet lol.

Im about an hour west of highway 81 crossing near thousand islands and 2 1/2 hours east of Buffalo crossing and 6 hours east of Detroit crossing. Getting to be a ton of bears in my area the past few years. got pictures of 4 smaller bears in a hay feild half a mile down from my house about a month ago and on the way home had 2 more much larger bear cross the road in front of me. Ive filled my tags fairly easy with gun and bow the last couple years hunting over bait about 300 yards from my back door. We have a long kill season from the first of september to the end of november, but no legal training season. Where abouts you comin from.
