raising pups

I'm fixing to raise my first litter of pups.
I was told that 10 days before pups are born
feed the mom powder calves milk mixed in warm water
and puppy feed.
Then after pups are born 2 to 3 weeks worm them once week.
then at 5 weeks take the mom away during the day and get the pups to eating puppy feed and the put the mom back in there at night. Do this for a week and the take her away for good.
The day i take her away I should give the pups there first set of shots and two weeks later give them another set and 2 weeks later give them another set. Does this all sound right? Also what kind of pup wormer does everyone use? If the shots are givin like i was told after the 3rd set when is the next one done by.

Just a question, but did your mom eat baby food 10 day's before you were born? The rest you got pretty good, I would let the pups eat warm soaked feed at 3 to 4 weeks with out there mom around and be sure they don't get feed when she is. Some of the "Nicest" mommies don't like anything around their feed.

I am not the expert at this, but I think that right before the dog has her pups, is not the time to be changing her diet, if she loosens up or goes off feed it is at the most important time when she is trying to whelp pups and then get cleaned out. Do what you like though.

Is this her first litter? You don't need the calves milk but she does need to be worm free and in a clean place. It wont do any good to give them a shot the day you take them off because the females milk gives them a imunity to the virus in the shot. I know its more money but take them to the vet for the shots dont use the ones you get from the feed store. I could be dead wrong on this but my vet says they are to old and to weak alot of the time when you bye them from the feed store.And no he isnt trying to make money because dosnt even charge me alot of the time. you can ask your vet if he will sell you the shot he uses and you give it at home this saves money some times. If you can let her have them in a pen up off the ground thats how I do it and its always worked out. Alot of people raise pups different ways but I've had quiet a few litters here and I've always had good healthy pups.

Wormer = Protector 2 X, same as Nemex for half the price.

i think this is the second litter. I buy most of my med. from a vet I use. I'm working on her kennel to have them in which are concrete kennels.

Here's what we do with ours.

**2 weeks before pups are born worm mother with Nemex 2. Makes puppies free of worms when they're born and they can absorb more of mothers milk.
**4 weeks vefore pups are due start giving her puppy food, change slowly day by day so that it dosent mess her system up.
**2 weeks before pups are born start adding a small thing of cottage cheese in with her puppy feed 1 time a day, it helps with milk production.
**worm pups every week from 2-10 and every 2 weeks from then on.
**we had to give our pups their first shots a 3 weeks old because we had to raise them on a bottle and they didn't get much of their mothers milk. We gave 1/2 a shot to each puppy. Another full shot at 6 weeks and another full at 9 weeks-we did buy these from the vet like Joey said.
**from 3 weeks old-when they can lick-we give them a teaspoon of Nutri-Cal-vitamins-3X a day.

EVERYTHING happens for a reason.

We produce several litters a year here at our kennel. We have not had to change mom's diet at all. We feed a 26/18 feed and it seems to do just fine. We free feed mom while she has the pup's with her. The pup's will let you know when they are ready for solid food. Around the fourth week they will be pushing into the pile at the food dish. We leave the pup's with mom until we see that she is trying her best to wheen them, then we take her out. Momma dog's can teach their pup's more about dog social order than we ever could. By all means if she is being a bad mama take the pup's away sooner.
Do de-worm mom a few weeks before her due date and again the week before. We use Pyrantol (SP) dogs like the taste and don't run when they see you coming with it. We start the pup's on the same at 2 weeks old and every week there after till 10 weeks old if they are still here. We send the pup's home with the next dose so the new owner can hopefully continue this. Keep up with de-worming the mom as well cause any worm eggs in her system will pass through the milk and re inhabit the pup's. You can supplement with a dairy product like the Cottage Cheese like was mentioned above. Can't hurt. Get some RED CELL and give a bit to mom and pup's if you feel they need a bit extra. Be sure pup's are in a warm dry place and always have enough fresh water for mom to drink.
We do NOT put down wood chips for the whelping box. Instead we use shreaded news paper. Wood chips have dust that can cause upper respitory problems. At a week and a half to 2 weeks we switch to a bit of cedar chips. Less dust than pine and helps with fleas if they are a problem.
Mom will have plenty of discharge for a few weeks after the birth so don't be alarmed but do watch for any yellow discharge showing infection, Pyrometra (SP)
We purchase the shots from REVIVAL.COM, same stuff the Vet uses and it is current stock with date lables on each small bottle. If you are going to have the pup's past 4 months old spend the few bucks and get the Rabies shots.
