"Artist" who Starves dog to death receives award for doing so

An artist by the name of Guillermo Habacuc Vargas paid children to help capture a dog living on the streets near his place of work in Nicaragua. He then chained the dog in the corner of an art gallery without food or water on a bare concrete floor.

The dog, who was already ill and starving, was then put on public display to patrons of the art gallery while being videoed daily until his death of starvation. This "art" video was then submitted by Vargas and won an award at the 2007 Costa Rican Central America awards.

These people were so impressed by his "art" they invited him back to participate in the 2008 Central American Biennial awards this year!

There is a petitition going around right now for signatures to ban this man from practicing his "art" again. I will try and find the link and post it later.

FYI, I did check this out with Snopes before posting... they do say that this did happen, though some of the exact details are not clear at this time. Here is what they have to say:

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) has looked into this, but although there are animal cruelty laws in Costa Rica, there are none in Nicaragua therefore no charges will be filed.

Vargas has admitted to the press that he did do this, and said it was only to prove a point that the public will become outraged by the mis-treatment and starvation of a dog out in the open, but would allow the same thing to happen to them on the streets without offering to help them themselves.

He also states that he will not be doing the same thing for this years awards, and will intead do a different "artistic study."

This full article in detail can be viewed on snopes.com, it was just updated April 14th, 2008. Although this actually happened at the end of last year, the press did not pick it up for some time afterward, when viewers of the video became upset and contacted the authorities. It is also circulating on Facebook as well with pictures and video of the poor dog. I will not post pictures as I do not want children to see them.

What gets me is of all the people who came into that art gallery, saw this poor dog, and walked away. No one during the dogs short life there filed a complaint, or notified the police. It wasn't until 4-5 wks AFTER the dog was dead and the "artistic" film had been released that anyone complained?

What can you expect from 3rd world countries??? How can man have multiple lovers/wives?? How can a man "own" another individual such as a woman like property?? How can people kill other innocent people with no remorce or sympathy?? Different country, different beliefs/morals/way of life.

As sick and pathetic as it was he did have a point. He could have made his point in so many other ways but more folks do get upset by what he did than how kids get treated in the same country. Down in Latin America abandoned kids and pariah dogs live on the streets and in the garbage dumps. So many orphans and not enough orphanages or adopting parents for them. Sadly, folks who live in those countries just get used to not seeing the kids and dogs. Some spots the policia just round them up and do the three S's. Some of you who have traveled need to sound off, stuff like this happens in many places, you just have to get beyond the tourist, nice areas. Not that you would want to, those are also dangerous places.
