cedar chips?

has anyone ever heard that its bad too use cedar chips in dog houses because it will effect (negatively) a dogs sense of smell? two people have told me this recently and i was wondering if anyone else has heard this or believes it to be true.

I don't think that I would believe that....The cedar does keep fleas/ticks away though and we have used it for long periods of time with no ill effects or any changes in the dogs' hunting abilities.....

I had some one tell me this and I asked them why that they believe this to be true and they said you'll see and well I did I have never had a problem with this. I even asked my vet one day when I was in his office and he laughed and said that is one of the craziest things that he ever heard of.

I've always heard the oils in it bother some dogs skin. I've always used pine straw.

Had some beagles that had skin reactions to the cedar chips, only as pups, caused red bumps and rashes, changed bedding to straw no problems. tried cedar again same skin reaction.

Give it a try and see how it works. Some dogs may have allergies to it but if smelling something strong would cause a dog to lose its sense of smell then why does my dog always seem to find dead snakes? That's just an old timers tale. Easier to repeat things than think them through is how they keep going.

I would NEVER use cedar chips

The fumes can irritate the nasal passages, an important part of a hound's anatomy. Also, if the skiin is wet and the dogs lies on the cedar chips or the chips are wet it can burn the hair off & cause visible irritation, especially on light skinned dogs such as Walkers.

best thing I have found is grass hay, it doesn't turn to dust and wont dry out their skin JMO

I've used cedar in my dog houses for over 40 yrs. without any ill effects whatsoever... It also repels ticks and fleas..Like everything you might use keep it clean.
