I took this new dog hunting we just bought from a fella in Ohio who will go unnamed at this point. The dogs struck while walking to the creek, we cut them loose ( three total dogs) off about 20-30 feet there is a dog standing there. I walk over and shine the light on her its the New dog standing there legs apart in stance and tremoring real bad one end to the other with her mouth open. I thought she was being electrified, she looked locked up in motion. I started to tell her it was ok and hang in there I petted her down the back and noticed what seemed like lots of black hair on her white coated legs, her back is blanket back black, white legs. I was telling her come on girl dont die on me. and she started moving all crazy in a forward motion like her legs were out of wack. and she ran into a buch of brush and continued like that out of site. She tried to keep up with the other dogs that ran across the road and down and through the creek bottom and fell treed. She never made it over there. We tracked her back down an adjoining road in the ditch doing the same thing moving like she was all locked up in motin and unable to get the legs moving at the same pace. THis morning I go out to feed the dogs and clean the kennels like I do every morning before work and she is jumping on her hind feet barking a mile a minute and normal?? I have noticed that after i got her ( paid cash + transport)almost immediately within two weeks she started losing her wieght? I feed em 6-7 cups of food a day and lots of water, deer bones after meals ham bones after meals let my lil boy give the coon dogs a piece of wheat bread... Amonth goes by and her coat isnt shiny anymore and small patches of bald hairless skin start showing up on her back down the spine I dont know 4-5 spots half a dime in size, Put a lil canola oil in her food and switch her to a food with omega 3 n omega 6's (switch all the dogs cuz summers coming and this is less fatty food) other dogs coats responding real nice hers isnt??And Now this? I dont want this passed on in the kennel...I have n appointment with a trusted vet to dropp her off next tuesday the 22n april for blood work and check her hips.. WHAT IS THIS???
For the gentleman who sold me this dog a whole frozen dog will be shipped to you and you'll never be forgotten until I can forgive it does take time n if ya think meeting on the freeway helps ya...Plates and truck and pictures of ya dont. So lets hopeits an easy fix. Any word from an honest coon hound owner on the brood dog I bought.

Could be several things, loss of hair down the back and no shiny coat makes me think of whip worms, also if the dog was feed with in a few hours before going hunting in could be the food swelling in it`s belly causing problems. JMO. I have had this happen to one of my hounds before.

My wife had a Lab\German Shepard mix that displayed those same symptoms(locking up, not being able to stand without wobbling, excessive salivation, loss of bowel control) turns out she had Epilepsy(sp?) . We gave her medicine for a while but it just got worse(more frequent) and she had her put to sleep.

Im guessing you will find you are dealing with 2 different problems. Neither of which is probably the fault of the person you bought it from.

1) the trembling/locked joints were most likely a blood sugar problem. Could be Epilepsy or diabetes, but most likely just the stress of a new owner and new surroundings.

2) the bald spots are probably a skin condition brought on by fungus or stress. It could be a fungus picked up while hunting or at home, or could again be the stress of a new owner and surroundings.

I ran into the same problem last fall when I bred my Crank gyp. She went down on a tree one night and has been fine every since. I think it was a result of breeding her (she was about 2 or 3 weeks bred) or she just finally ran out of gas. I hunted her about 250 nights last year and this was about in the middle of that.

She also gets the same skin condition when the fescue gets tall and is also wet. Once most of it was bailed for hay the problem went away. It can also come from the dogs bedding (the fungus). I keep her bedded with old blankets and change them about once a week and wash them in bleach, instead of bedding her in straw/hay/or wood chips.

Most of the time if its a skin condition caused by fungus, its on the belly, legs, an ears though. (thinnest hair)

I feed the dogs in the morning and water. Water again when we get home after hunting, and they've been sitting in the box on the way home calming down. We worm our dogs every other month. Thanks for the replys..anybody else? epilpsy, didnt think of that...she had hunted 3 times in the last 2 months after we bought her acted fine loud,loud fast catching offgame on the ground...just wondering..Hate to sell her, breed her. pour money on her and then ....nothing but a bad opinion of me and what Iam n what I do. If I made a mistake I'll take the heat n the loss.To larrypoe i will take all of the straw out of there houses its been two weeks since I put new in there maybe thats it with the skin thing, when we first got her I had all kinds of blackets being changed in the dog houses,,, it was jan/feb and cold n wet. The dogs are in a new kennel system that has cost 1100$ for three dogs and its gravel based with bags of rock salt spread on the ground before the 3tons of gravel was shoveled in there by hand. The place is clean! and so is the dishes..yet the straw could be changed more often..it has been a couple of weeks. Thanks.They've been in the new kennels for a month.

i would say this man owes you atleast part of your money back or an offer on another pup or hound, where is his integrity from here on out! it is sad things work like they do some times. he may have honistly not known somthing was wrong with this young dog, but he could make an offer to make it right. I can not sell dogs very well my self because i have this thing wrong with me called telling the truth even if it herts

Maybe your new dog will get better i hope so !

I saw this same exact thing happen to a male beagle in the pen after one of his pen mates had jumped on him and bit him, really more like he pinched him right at the base of his skull, it left no marks and if I hadn't seen it happen I would not have known the cause of his little "episode"

The dogs are all in seperate 10x 10 kennels. The female is 5 just turned last month. Again a "brood dog that just needed to be hunted more"

Dont sound to me like it has anything to do with the seller!!!! The dog probably has the mange! A certain type is brought on from stress.I had one that did it.Lost weight,mange flared up..Vet said it was from stress.Probably caused by new surroundings and new owner..The other was likely caused by feeding to much before hunting or had a diabetic seisure..The other owner may or may not have known about that..

If your problem doesn't go away try feeding a candy of some sort before turn loose.Won't cost much to try.Worked for me.

I don't know what the skin problem could be but sounds to me like your dog is having siezures.When they have episodes like that and then everything appears normal again it's probably a siezure.I have had two dogs who have acted this way.Can be controlled in some dogs with medication.Doesn't help them all.

What I was thinking, sounds like Mange for the hair loss, as for the trembling and shaking......maybe new surroundings etc ?

Give her several doses of Ivomec spread out over next 30 days, cut back on so much feed, for sure before you hunt her....good luck with her................Tim

sounds like epileptic seizures to me. This can be controlled with meds, and there are triggers that can be avoided, like keeping the dog from getting very hot. Let us know what the vet says.
Seizures can be inherited or caused by head trauma. Is there any chance she got her head injured during transport? For instance stopping short, minor accident?

Are you feeding High Protein feed? If you are, you might cut back to a 21% protein feed. If it is a sugar problem the high protein will trigger a seizure and if you continue to feed high protein it will have the opposite effect on the dog. Some dogs just can't handle it and it will also give them the hot spots and other skin irritations.

The vet gave a thorough (sp) exam of Ladys hips and felt the rotation in the hip socket was wallowed out. Could feel vein damage in the legs and asked if I had noticed the shape of the lower region near the vulva and I admitted it didnt look as healthly as it should or compared to my 3 year old that we are getting ready to breed. I told him she is a power house and has pull and doesn't cry or scream in pain when the legs are out of motion he said she wouldn't, but the tremors and the shaking .....its just a d*mn shame... This is 100% genetic.

Her momma ( I photo copied the papers before I sent them in to look for changes, pup percentages of wins more litters and such)
was "PR Timber paws stylish sadie UKC # u206,016.....Then
When the papers came back her mommas name had changed to "PR Bennett's Bighorn Sadie UKC # u206,016. The sire to this cull dog is GRNTCH Incredible Rebel.

I understand there are culls in every litter...I also understand there are LIARS. THis dog was sold as a "EXCELLENT SUPER BROOD FEMALE" for $$425 .00 plus shipping

I don't know how her mother could get a "name change" she had produced pups, UKC don't work that way. Once a dog has sired pups, the name can't change.

Also, I don't know any of the parties on here from Adam, but they sold her to you, by your own words as a brood female.
What were you expecting? DO you know that she had the issue before she got to your house? Were you expecting more in the woods? Brood Female does not usually = GRNITE material.

Just some things to ponder. Sorry about your luck with your purchase of her, stinks that it happened to you.

Health Certificate and Hunt before you buy are good things from here on out.

One other thing, not every person that sells hounds here is selling Culls.

Sounds like a chitty deal. Shes not even breeding material and thats what you bought her for... Sad real sad. But at least you did the right thing and culled her instead of selling her to someone else or taking her back to the previous owner so they could sell her again. Kudos to you for doing the responsible thing.

I don't know what all that other mess was about at the bottom of your post. I don't know if the fella knew the dog was sick, don't even know if he offered to make it right, that is between you and him.

The name change deal happened a couple of yeas ago, they did it to make it easier to keep track parentage.
Sucks that you got a bad deal, but good luck with those Stylish Rube Pups! Where are you located, and PM me with some info on who you crossed on him, may be interested in a pup.
