Yes

high protein in the summer does cause a dog to over heat faster. Drop your protein to something like 18 or 20 with a fat content of 16 to 18 & you should do fine. To high of protein actually can cause hot spots in dogs. I always feed a lower protein in the summer.

i am feeding 30-20 and both the vet and dog feed store says that this is just an old urban legend.

I believe it effects some dogs but I am not sure that it warrants taking them off high protien. I think you stand a better chance of damaging a dogs kidneys from the high protien than overheating them, Especially a dog that is in good running condition should have no problems. On the other hand if it is no problem to switch feed, then you probably will not notice any adverse effects from switching anyway. No scientific facts JMO. lol

what do you guys think about pro plan performance 30/20

what does protein do? what does fat do?

both of them make my dogs fat...

Posted by EnglishBabe on 04-11-2008 01:00 AM:

Protein builds muscle, fat gives them energy, actually carbohytrates give them the energy, it's the gas that makes them go, so to speak. I always feed a higher fat content in the winter because it helps them stay warmer.

Yes, to high of protein will overheat them, cause hot spots & burn out their kidneys. Dog food has corn in it, corn produces heat, in summer, that extra heat is not needed, so in essence, overheating. Common sense, along with vets opinion & personal experience has proven this to me. I'm noy saying every dog that eats a high protein diet is going to overheat, have hot spots & die from kidney failure. I'm saying that the chances are higher there.

Do a web search & get their answers.

so where does the fat come from

Posted by ghostcoon on 04-11-2008 01:15 AM:

if high protein hurts a dog how do you explain all the guys that feed raw? Most the raw stuff is up in the 80% protein area. I hear plenty of people do it. THe pet store lady says she feeds her dogs raw food and always has and there just house dogs.

protein for muscle
carbs for energy
calcium for bone
what does fat do

Posted by ghostcoon on 04-11-2008 01:43 AM:

lol idk i dont have the anwser for that question. I feed Nutri Source 30/20. Just started the other day. I was feeding 24/16 but it wasnt enough he never had energy and couldnt keep weight on.

high fat will cause a dog to overheat. protein builds muscle, carbs are for energy on demand, and fat is reserve energy. protein and fat work together. to much fat will burn up protein and to much protein will burn up fat.. it needs to be balance for the need of the dog..

thats hot, you could feed less and feed in the mourning or after hunting, every dog has a different metabolisom. if your feeding a good amount of protein and the dog is loosing body condition raise the fat a little. protein will turn reserve fat into muscle..

How's it going Brandon

I'm a firm believer in Pro Plan. It really depends on how hard you are hunting her. You might try a bag mixed with Hi Pro or Dog Chow. I have heard good reports on the mixing of Pro Plan and Dog Chow.

Brandon

You also could try Joy. Rogers elevator in Otisville carries Joy in both maintenance and performance. Good Luck

i just spoke with my cousins girlfriend, shes a vet. This is what she told me. Dogs are carnivores, they can live off raw feed with protein levels up in the 80%. Wolves live to be just as old, and there diets are 90 to 95% protein. Dogs that overheat in the summer and those that have kidneys burn are overweight.

So explain to me why, when I was feeding 26/18 to my Bulldogge, she had hot spots & scratched herself raw on her back. The vet told me to feed her crappy food i.e. lower protein & fat, & she got right as rain. Truthfully, I have never had a coonhound get a hot spot, most all my dogs are fed 26/18, except in the winter, then it's 24/20 & I don't have much probelm. My pug gets hot spots from the 26/18 too in the summer.

maybe its because they are not active enuff to burn up the calories... and they do better on less fat and protein...dunno
