If you just got him I would let him get used to you. He probably needs time to adjust. Take him around new things too. Jessica

if your impatient he probably isn't the dog for you!!! it takes alot of it..best to give a couple kids the job. you would be suprised how well they come around with kids playing and messing around with them...he wont be ready for training until he is showing he is happy by putting his tail in the air..if he's not ready you will just set him backwards..

well i def. do not want to set him back..or scar him from coons...so i guess i'll just spend extra time each day with him till he comes around i guess do i need to keep showing him a coon or wait...when my other walker dog is barking at the coon he just shys away...?

I agree with Dans Dogs all the pups Ive raised where 1st my kids play mates when they where small,It helps alot to work with them before they are handled for hunting. I bought one a yr ago that was man shy I tried everything he had to be culled.

don't mess with a coon, he needs to be socialized with his new owner and surroundings and anything else that keeps his tail between his legs...when he's happy to be where he is, he will show you.. get strangers to give him treats that he likes. when he gets use to that take him to different places around big crowds of people..when he is getting comfortable with socializing and you want to start working with a coon, take the coon to the dog in stead of taking the dog to the coon..

One of the best companion dogs that I've ever had was a black lab pup that was born with inverted eyelids. The folks that raised him had several kids, and they played with all of the other pups out of the litter, except this one. By the time he was ten weeks old...he was as wild as a deer. It took us two days to catch him...he was scared as anything I'd ever seen.

Once I caught him, I held him....I held onto him all day until we both fell asleep that night....the next morning, I let him down, and he was my best friend. Now I could have held him for a while, and put him out in the yard, and eventually he probably would have come around....but that day was well spent. I didn't get much done, other than make a life long friend.

So much of training a dog is just good old fashioned common sense. If you were already afraid of something, lets say riding a bike when you were five years old, and your parents sent you off to a strangers house...you were already a little intimidated, and did not know who you could trust.....next think you know, they are putting you on a bike and expecting you to ride it...how long would it take for you to become permanently frightened of bikes, and how motivate would you be to ride a bike?

Make friends with the pup, let him grow up emotionally and physically before you ask him to perform for you!

I would establish his trust in you before showing him any coons.
I have always made the dog let me pet them then after a few minutes I would turn my back to them and move away a few feet.
I would always keep my hands down at my side showing the palms to them like an invitation. after a few days of doing this I have always had good luck with the dog responding and actually looking for effection. They will actually start coming to you. You may have to repeat this proceedure to get the response. If they do not come to me I do not repeat the same day. I just get them some feed and start again the next day. the key is to get them to where they are seeking your effection instead of just tolerating it.
This may sound silly but it is the only way I tame wild dogs. I have tried everyway possible

Good luck.
