Police investigate coon hound shooting

By Russ Cassady Staff Writer

Officials have said an investigation is underway into the shooting of a Pike man’s hunting dogs by a Kentucky State Police trooper in Letcher County.

Arnold Coleman of Virgie said he was hunting for raccoons using his dogs in Pike County on March 29, when the signal on the tracking collars he used on the dogs went dead.

“I stayed out all night looking for them,” Coleman said.

Despite not being able to find the dogs, he continued to look for them.

“Most of the time when you lose hunting dogs, when they get wore out, they track themselves back,” he said.

After finally picking the signal back up at an area of Letcher County, he began looking for the dogs there, and was having no luck calling them when a Kentucky State Police Trooper who lived in the area where the signal was found stopped him.

The trooper, whom Coleman would not name, told him the dogs were dead and handed Coleman their tracking collars in a bag, before telling Coleman he knew they were dead because he had shot them.

“Everything in me went dead,” he said. “And my daughter started bawling.”

Coleman claims the trooper told him the dogs had “treed” a raccoon and were barking, keeping him awake, when the trooper finally shot them.

“I told him, ‘You didn’t just kill one of the best hunting dogs in the country, you killed a family pet too,’” Coleman said.

Coleman said he brought the dogs back to his Pike County home, where he buried them, then tried to begin to get someone to look into the case.

KSP Post 13 Commander Capt. Jerry Bailey confirmed this week that the agency is looking into the situation.

“There has been an incident brought to our attention and it is currently being investigated,” Bailey said.

However, as the case is still being investigated, he could not comment on the facts or on Coleman’s allegations.

Kentucky law states that any peace officer or animal control officer can seize or destroy a dog found running at large between the hours of sunset and sunrise and not under the control of its owner or handler.

However, the law also states that officer is under a duty to make a fair and reasonable effort to determine whether any dog found at large between sunset and sunrise is a hound or other hunting dog which has become lost temporarily from a pack or has wandered from the immediate control of its owner.

Also, if he is reasonably sure the dog is a hunting dog, he cannot kill the dog unless it is pursuing or wounding livestock or poultry or is attacking human beings.

Coleman said this week he does not want to name the trooper until he is sure of his rights.

It is sickning to me that anyone would take the life of an animal for the sake on one nights lost sleep. Hopefully justice will be served.

I'm happy to hear something is being done about these hounds being exterminated.

I want to share an experience myself and son had 3 weeks ago.

We were hunting here at the house on a 800 acre patch when our 4 y/o grnitech and 14 month old pup struck a coon then treed a half mile on property of a fella who has a reputation for being not so pleasant when it comes to his 100 acres.

My son immediately called to get Mr.un-nameds phone number.Jason called and got the answering machine but left a message stating " this is Jason Crenshaw, my dad and I are coon hunting, the dogs got out of pocket and are treed near your house...please don't kill our dogs,, we're on our way in there to retrieve them.

We drove the Ranger to the back side of the place we were hunting and Jason hoofed it on foot to the dogs.Me having multiple sclerosis...I sit and wait, thinking the worst is going to happen any minute now.

Upon Jasons arrival, the dogs are treed not 75 yards from this fellas house (which had every light on)and another 75 yards from a barn lot that had several steers in it.The owner of the property was waiting at the tree, had gun in hand.Jason thanked him for not shooting our dogs and explained the situation, even told mr.un-named we had left a message on his answering machine because of our concern for our hounds well being.. The owner of the property said,"Jason,I didn't get your phone message,I heard the dogs barking, thought they were molesting my live stock, got my rifle, came outside, saw the lighted collars of your dogs and knew someone would be here shortly. I would never shoot anyones coonhounds unless they were molesting my livestock."

To make a long story short...it worked out.....but..........would it all have worked out if the hounds didn't have on their lighted collars?
I have no idea but when pleasure hunting, our hounds always have on their lighted collars. I'm thankful it worked out for the better.

Hounds cannot read posted signs. I feel it is our responsibilty to aquaint ourselves with all land owners, even if a select few don't allow coonhunting and let them be aware our hounds may chase ole ricky onto their property & if so, the hounds will be retrieved a.s.a.p.

I'll bet his story will change to him protecting livestock or his family. They will tell him what to say to stay out of trouble.

Hold on now

We should be careful what we say about the K S P investigation.
First let me say I am employeed as a D/S and if a "I A" investigation was conducted by my Dept it would be conducted in a profeshinall and thorough way and I hope it will be the same in KY. Now I want to say it infurate's me and haunts me to think a person that is sworn to save lives and protect property would stoop so low as to kill a dog that was doing no wrong, action's like that puts a large dark cloud over all of us, and that makes me MAD. ..... That is as low as it gets I mean low......

jiM: I hope It don't work out that way. You can bet he better get a LAWYER and not tomorrow ether, I know I fool with them on a regular bases, but he needs one to keep the fire going so to speak, and we as hunters need to do what ever it takes to see this to the end no matter where we live.
Last but not least I bet if Wayne was still living it would not get pushed under the carpet. COME ON KENTUCKY HOUNDSMEN GET IT ON.
See you down the road. H L meyer

James200. Good story. I had the same thing happen except no phone call. The farmer heard them out behind his barn and went outside with his gun but saw the lighted collars. Said he knew they weren't strays so didn't shoot. I hunt 3 or 4 places that the farmers remember me by my lighted collars.

That cop hopefully gets nailed.
