My own version of coon fusion

Guys we have just recently cooked us up a batch and tried to make our own version of coon fusion/lix. Got an old hard candy recipe and used cool aid and vanilla extract for smell and cooked it just like hard candy and it set up good. Haev a piece of pvc 1/2 pipe in the middle and got a 45 cent nail to hammer into the tree and it goes through the pvc. I will let you know if it works. We are fine tuning our recipe, and production. If it works I will post the recipe. I think it cost about 3-5 dollars per block.

has anyone else tried this?

How hot did you have to cook it? I never could get it to hard.

i had to get a candy thermometer and it has to reach 300 degrees, but for good measure I took it to 340. It takes a good while to get it that hot. But it sure nuff candied. twice as much sugar as water and as much corn syrup as water. Mix in a cup of grape cool aid and boil it until it reaches 300 degrees or better and when you take it off the heat 2 tablespoons of vanilla and pour it in whatever mold you have made and let it cool over night. I have no clue if they will eat it but it smells good. Next batch I am going to mix in oatmeal oats.

Shoot throw you in some peanuts while you are at it. Man that ought to make go crazy. LOL!!!!!!!!! Sounds like a winner though.

I used molasses & cracked corn and it takes a lot of heat to get molasses up to 340 degree's. You said you used corn syrup & water along with other ingredients so you didn't use molasses at all then? I know my concoction didn't work maybe I need to try yours.

Posted by Jsun2254 on 03-31-2008 08:05 PM:

shoot i tried some of it before I put in vanilla and man it aint bad. lol

I am putting the oatmeal in it for texture when I looked at the coon fusion I saw something that resembled sweet feed mixed in it, so i figured oatmeal should be good enough. May get creative with some molasses too.lol

I

BEAT IT WORKS BETTER THAN WAT YOU CAN BY,THEY WILL EAT IT TO I BET,KEEP US INFORMED,,HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR MOLD,THATS ALL I NEED IS A MOLD,,I USE DOG FOOD IN BUCKETS BECALS THEY RASE MORE YOUNG BUT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD SWEET TREAT FOR THEM AROUND MY BUCKETS ON MY FARM I USE THEM TO START PUPS ONE ONLEY,DAVID BOGGS

Posted by Jsun2254 on 04-01-2008 02:10 AM:

my mold is a 3.00 metal bucket from walmart it is about the same size as the ones you buy coon fusion in and the little buckets have a small wood handle. Coat the bucket with butter and after it sets up you can pop a time or two and it will come right out. You can use the buckets over and over again. I bought two buckets so I can make two at a time. Ill let you know how it works. Rained all day here so I am anxious to see how it holds up.

no molasses this time

I made a batch and it turned out pretty good. I used a similar recipe from www.coondawgs.com . I did have to cook it twice though the first time I didn't get it hot enough and it didn't set up. I reheated it strained out the corn and aded more sugar. It set up hard as rock candy that time. I used electric fence wire to hang it. just doubled up a piece and stuck it in the mold coiled up on one end and it worked good. I guess it worked. I put it out in the woods then wasn't able to make it out for a bout a week. when I check on it there wasn't a trace of it left. Something ate it.

How about telling how much of each & how long you cook it unless you don't want to reveal trade secrets. I got frustrated & just stopped trying.

Posted by Lacey on 04-01-2008 05:31 PM:

It’s not a matter of how long you cook it. If the mixture doesn’t reach at least 300-310 degrees you could cook it for 3 days and it won’t set up. Corn syrup is the magic hardening ingredient. For anyone using just molasses with the cracked corn, or dog food, or peanut butter etc...and its not getting hard, add about 1 cup of corn syrup (per block), keep it boiling for at least 25 min and use a candy thermometer to check the temp. You will notice the consistency of the mix changes as it starts hitting the hard crack stage at 300 deg. The bubbles start to get flatter and the mixture starts looking thicker, is the best way I can describe it. Let it boil a min or so in that stage and then hurry up and poor it in your mold. Bottom line is you have to get it to 300-310 deg and it will harden up like a lollie pop.

lacey hit it on the head.

I use
6 cups sugar
2.5 cups water
1.5 cup grape cool aid mix
1.5 cup corn syrup
mix it up boil until it gets 330 degrees
after it does add in 2 tbls of vanilla extract

pour it in the mold
put a piece of 1/2 pvc in middle and pour around the pvc

pvc needs to be abour 17-9 inches long

after it sets up take a big nail/ spike 45 cents apiece at home depot and nail it to the tree.

I might have to give one of these a try, Thanks Jsun!
Couple Questions though,
1.) Does it melt away on it's own if it gets wet?
2.) What is the PVC Pipe for?

Lacy and Jsun have it about right. I only use 1/4 cup water. The more water you put in, the more you have to boil out. I spray my mold with PAM.

I made mine going by the recipe on coondawgs.com. I didn't use corn syrup, just sugar, and I had to boil the crap out of them before they would harden. Seems like the kool aid cooked out of them, on my next batch I planned to wait til the last minute to add the kool aid, and I may try the corn syrup, as well. For the molds, I bought 22 oz. plastic tumblers at the dollar store for $1.50 for 6 and sprayed the iside with pam cooking spray. Take a strip of cardboard about 6 " long and poke a few threads of the lag bolt thru it with the bolt head sticking down into the mixture a few inches and let the cardboard lay across the top of the cup. This will hold the bolt straight up until the candy hardens around it, then just rip the cardboard off. My biggest problem, and maybe someone can help me, is how to suspend the corn/dog food in the mixture without it floating to the top and leaving a thick layer of food on top and all candy on bottom.

Thanks alot, I am getting out the pots & cooker and going to try again. I didn't know about the corn syrup so I'll give it a try. With those mixtures, how big a block of the stuff does it make?

cook it hot, and cook it long.

I add my corn, vanilla, anise oil or whatever after I pour my mixture into the mold. TIMING is of the essence. If the mixture is too hot the liqiud ingredients evaporate out and the solids will float to the top. For those whose corn floated to the top, don't throw them away. They make excellent squirrel feeders.
