Whats the best way to train a pup??

Trying to find out the best way to train a pup. The first dog I ever trained, I trained him by hunting him with an old dog untill he started doing it on his own. I here of dogs treeing their first time out and also of dogs that are never shown a caged coon. Can you actually train a dog by never showing him a caged coon and also never hunting him/her with an older broke dog???

You can train a dog without another dog or a caged coon but it sure is a chore..if I was you I'd train em the same way ya done the first one...it makes training alot more fun and easy. imo

get you a heavy, heavy, Jet and hammer bred pup. Those little rascals are born treeing. Now, your gonna have all kinds of interesting little problems with em later in life..... lol. BUT, they do in fact start early and easy.

get you a pup thats says Jet V this and Jet V that and northern blue all over the papers. Its unbelievable how early and natural those pups start.

I usually take my younger pups (3-7 months old) out for walks in the woods during the day or just leave em run loose on the farm until they get about 8 or 9 months old. Then I show em a caged coon, then release one for em once during the day and then once at night. Then I usually will start taking them with my older broke dog half the time and by theirself half the time. This has seemed to work real well, we've started our last 4 or 5 pups like this and they will all tree their own coon now....

just put them in the woods. You can read anybodys post claiming they know how to "train" a coondog, but the truth is most the dogs out there are bred to be naturaly capable of treeing coon. Older dog helps. JMO

its great to come on the internet and read stories about peoples dog going out and treeing coon on there own at 6 or 7 months old. Your going to spend A LOT of time in the woods walking around.

start with lead brakeing then when they listen good and well start takeing them to the woods if they have it in them it will come out

start at home.... teach to load, lead & come when called.... then put 'em in the woods.......

whoever says they do it naturally nusn't have trained many pups i will agree that they will hunt something but not what you want too if your lucy one in a hundred know what to hunt right from the start. i use a caged coon jusi io let them know what there supposed to hunt and to teach them coons climb. thrn bring them to the woods you have to be careful what hound your training them with as they will pick up as many bad habits the trainer hound has as the trainer hounds good points once they get to know what there supposed to do train them mostly on there own i have seen many young hounds that won't hunt unless there with another hound training them alone developes them into a hound with confidence and helps them to be independant rather than a me too hound

you dont need pup trainer or older hound but it does help alot i trained my 4 year old by herself but now i use her to start pups with

Start with a good gentetic background. After that teach them commands you want the to know. If possible let them run loose on a farm. This help teach them how to get around and trail scent.
Show them a cage coon or 2. Careful not too many. Let them run 1 and then the other by scent. Then take them to the woods. If you have an dog that doesn't hunt hard too that will help. One that opens on the ground to help keep pups interested.

Of course this is my opinion.
