conformation events

My name is Julia. I'm a new Bluetick owner....she is 15 weeks. How can I find out about conformation events in my area --- Dallas, Texas? I'm also interested in obedience showing -- used to show 2 German Shorthairs in the AKC -- they were awesome. I didn't do much at all except show them what to do. They were both in the top ten .....I was lucky to have such special dogs. My Bluetick is brilliant as well. So, I expect we'll end up in the obedience ring too. But I'm unfamiliar with the UKC. Any help would be appreciated.

Juila,I am sure that the pup will do find,but this is a hunting dog it needs to be hunted enough to find out if it will help the bluetick breed.If not spay or destroy!We do not need any more just show dogs,Hey I show myself.but if they do not word out in the woods ,It`s THE BONE YARD period.

don't you think that is a little rank???What does it hurt if someone wants a hound just to show????As far as I can see there is plenty of room for each and everyone that wants to compete with a hound whichever way they want.If you want only a hound from hunting stock then it is YOUR responsibility to either raise it or go out and find one from hunting stock only.If I want to just show hounds it is my business and my privledge to do just that.

Julia, Nimrod,Texas is haveing a show and hunt this week-end Sat. the 9th) starting at around 5 pm and Dublin,Texas is having one the following week-end (Sat. the 16th) at about the same time.Either place would be glad for your attendance.

You are right ! But do we want just a show dog line.Look what the show dog people have done for the German Shepherd breed. You can not get a all American bred shepherd worth the time it takes to train,the working has been bred out of them,training will not put it back.

Thank goodness that not everyone thinks like you. The goal is to improve the breed, and believe me I have seen far more dogs that hunt and are so conformationly incorrect as you will ever find than show dogs that don't hunt. Yet the hunt dogs are the one's that are the primary focus while the show dogs take second fiddle. If Julia chooses to show and not hunt her dog that is her choice and who do you think you are to tell her that if she doesn't hunt her dog it should be destroyed or spayed? The breed would be more improved to have show dogs with excellent conformation used as breeding stock than some flat footed, cow hocked dog that does hunt. Many show dogs hunt or compete in water races and have excellent conformation. Which is more important producing a quality dog or one with only a good nose?

As you can see, it's an age old discussion/argument when it comes to show vs. hunting . . . .and it's not going to change anytime soon, in my opinion. . . .for what it's worth.

Ax and I got back into this thing last year and wound up with two littermate sisters born 7/5/02 and another female whelped 7/23/02 -- it's been insanity . . . .lol. We started showing them in February of this year (as soon as they turned 6 mos old) and have two grand bench champions and one bench champion. The grands are now in the timber learning to hunt while we finish the third . . . and, by the way, the first one finished treed her own coon with less than a week of nights in the timber . . .not with alot of style, but she did it. I personally like to show them in the confirmation classes first, since any injuries, although not deducted for according to the rulebook, take away from the overall picture. Here again, it's a personal preference thing. I also believe that confirmation classes give the dog a chance to become "people-ized" with the hauling, handling, and such.


Here's another reason why, I personally, like to go the confirmation route first. For 20 plus years I was married to a man in the horse business. The pleasure horse industry has huge money futurities for the two year olds. I watched people push their young stock, making them conform before they were physically able to compete at a specific level. I watched the horses that competed in these futurities and win, fizzle and burn out. Keep in mind that there was always an exception or two -- but you can see why I believe in letting the pups grow up, conditioning them and then sending them to the timber. Not saying that our pups didn't have coon tails to play with when out and the kids always love to play "nose" games with them during there excercise time, this is all in preparation for the day when they are physically able to go run the woods . . .and again each dog is different. Just takes common sense laced with a little knowledge of bloodlines, their abilities, and your personal goals.

Hounds are wonderful companions and I see nothing wrong with them being just a confirmation dog. I've witnessed older people that can no longer physically make it to the timber for one reason or the other, that continue to enjoy their hounds by showing them in the confirmation classes, swimming in water races, treeing contests, etc. It's great that we can keep them involved in our sport in one form or the other.

Our deal is simple. We look for good confimation with the bloodlines to make a good all around dog. The kids have shown the pups on the bench and treck along to the timber. They want to learn so that they can particpate in the youth events next year since they have had such a good time going to the bench shows this year. Ax and I would like to make our "girls" dual grands. Don't kid yourself there's pride in opening those envelopes from UKC and pulling out the parchment paper with your dogs name, and you listed as owner, regardless of what division the accomplishment is in!!!!

Subscribe to the coonhound bloodlines. Go to the events, watch, listen and learn. Read and know the breed standards and rules. Ask questions, there are a bunch of wonderful people in this sport. And most of all, HAVE FUN.

Listen ,I said that I was showing dogs too,just take the time to find out if the dog has the natural ability,you know to tree a coon by smell not sight.before you breed the darn thing.Yes kill before you breed if you do not take the time to prove to yourself that the dog is worthy.If that is to much to ask you do not need a dog,much less a hound!

There will be a UKC Multi Breed show that you can enter your Bluetick in at Gaineville Texas on the 27th and 28th of September. Information should be on the UKC Conformation page.
I believe there will be 3 shows that weekend at the indoor air conditioned civic center. I know that several coonhound show fanciers from this area, including myself, are planning on attending. So load up that new dog and come on out...we would love to meet you!!
