i normally get them what id call "lightly started" on coon-its good to walk them into a few bear trees- let them see and smell a bear - -get used to the noise ,comotion , great if a young pup can see and smell a few run away from tree before u even let them go - the excitement is pretty contagious if they have it in them--

then , put them on a bear track and with older ' pup safe' dog /dogs

i would prefer to never put them on a coon but it isnt always practical-sometimes it just depends when they are born-
i have a 5 month total bear season --- so 7 months of the year there is no bear hunting here - i think its important to get a pup "started " before it may be physically old enough, strong enough- to make a real hard bear race-- i don't like to get pups in the habit of trailing way behind--just chasing dogs, or quitting , i will try them young but not too often till they are making the race -- if you go at it a little slower, more will "make it " -- pretty normal for a 6 month old pup to run and tree a coon-- not realistic to expect them to tree bear or even make harder races at that age - difference between bear dogs and coondogs is we have 2 year old " pups' seen a lot of "pups ", just "started "on bear at 18 months make real dogs at 3 ,if they dont have it at 3 --probably never will -

if you cant run with other dogs you may have a long hard road ahead -
it can be done- better off with 2-3 dogs

hunt them on coon hard-- switch to bear and slowly break them off coon--- this is the hard way --lol
