When they Outlawed Grayhound Racing by the poor Fokes..

They bred it down to the Whippet so they could hide their hounds under their Slickers..

Some fokes had large pockets in their coats and had a Lurcher and A Whippet in their while walking down the road .. While no one was around he would slip out the Lurcher to work the rock walls and when he jumped the Hare then he would slip the Whippet for the catch... Then Run Back Home with dinner..

you need a better book, not trying to offend just saying your source of info is pretty poor. whippets were bred for short racing, ratting & rabbit, running hares are too much for them in terms of stamina & fighting back at the catch. they can take them on the lamp fairly well, as hares squat when shined (ask anyone from jackrabbit country) and a whippet is pretty fresh for the fight when they catch them that way . modern lurchermen sometimes used multiple dogs, mostly for training & red deer (eurasian elk, the brit stags top out at 400#). the oldtimers & modern purists use a single lurcher for what he is good at, no two lurchers are created equal for example bullygreys & deerhoundX often have trouble picking up rabbits because of their shorter heavier necks. obviusly these crosses excell on fox, deer & stag while the collieXgrey often lack the fire ro fox or the substance for stags. remember what they are doing is illegal and multiple dogs increase your chances of getting caught. also i want to see anyone walk around w/ a coat that holds a 40-60# lurcher & a 20-35# whippet do you have any idea how big either of these dogs would be. just for reference my saluki/grey is 29 1/2 inches and 65-66# when in top condition. bullygreys will be heavier at any height and collie, or bedlington crosses similar in build just shorter.

There are some rocky mountain clubs that still hunt jacks with purebred sighthounds... Rocky Mountain Coursing Club out of Colorado - and, there's another one that hunts up in Montana... They used to have whippet entries.

Not to my taste, the terrain is awful - imagine following in a gallery over plowed or rocky ground for 20-30 miles a day - not to mention carrying forcepts to dislodge cactus quils in bitter cold (-20 deg).

In 25+ years in whippets, I've only had one that I'm sure could stand up to a jackrabbit course (she's been gone over ten years).

I did know one guy that hunted coyotes with one deerhound and an old Borzoi.

i'm talking about the rule not the exceptions. I heard from Dutch about a fella in AZ that uses whippets exclusively & breeds for their performance on jacks. his are bigger than normal but still not as big as a grey and they catch as a pack. if i were going to only be taking jacks & cottontails at night in TX w/ the occasional grey fox i'd get a good pair of whippets in a heartbeat. in fact because of the thick undergrowth here, i am considering a whippet to pair w/ the "coonhound" in the pic for better take of deer.
most of coyote hunters use stags & coldbloods. a few are adding saluki blood for improved endurance & heat resistance. most people using deer or the wolfhounds are dabblers like myself.

you might try a coldblood instead of a track dog they are a bit more rugged, even more so if you can find someone who started his line w/ a lot of cunningham blood.

the blackdog is dumb as a post, has a horrible run up & blows the turns, but he has no quit & big brass ones.
if i had a hotblood (preferably a gyp) that had the desire i would at least hunt it on rabbit & hare. crossing off to another hunt bred dog or bull breed will fix all the deficiencies the hotbloods have.
the red dog was a brute on hog & bear, but gentle & patient as a lamb w/ my kids. unfortunately i lost him to a brain tumor right after this hunt.
the white dog is a brute of a catch dog, but sweet as pie w/ his owners kids.
we caught & tied 4 that weekend & caught & killed one. the black dog bayed 2 of the first 3 and caught on the last two. the last one bayed in a creek next to a fallen tree. the red dog swam UNDER the tree to catch on it's open ear. here's a pic of one killed & his twin tied in the back of my truck.

Big Hogs! Brain tumors... waited all morning for a call from our vet for test results on my bluedawg(pet)... They suspect a brain tumor and he's headed off to the big vet hosp. for MRIs and spinal taps etc.. as soon as we can get an appt. 6 yr old dog... and soon after the loss of my greyhound... We'll pay to "fix" this is we can...he's my first coonhound and as much as he's "just a pet" he's family.....
I'm sorry you lost yours to one. Those dogs are the great brutes. Hunting brutes. Around here...we're close to Boston and Providence... you have the MORONS who get them to look tough... I hate people... sure do love dogs though As for the black one being dumb as a post...LOL.. the description of many Irish Setters, Afgans and Salukis LOL....
What does " horrible run up" mean? Lots of terms I can figure out but some stump me.

I love to see the different ways we can do things with our dogs. A lot of people don't "get" the working relationship of dog and human. I hope some day my husband gets to retire and train his own coonhound pup to hunt. It will be a first for us.
Keep enjoying those dawgs and work hard to keep the right to do so!

Thanks for sharing the pics, they make me want go run dogs.

I think, in England, they almost have 2 seperate types of whippet - coursing (hunting) and show. and, make no bones about bringing in grey, saluki - for field coursing dogs... Their English Whippet Club dogs are basically ornamental (not unlike 80% of American Whippet Club dogs). You are right, I've seen whippets from Colorado with big feet and long legs - and they are tough cookies!!

I do feel overall, that if I wanted to kill rabbits, it's hard to get more kill drive than a Saluki... they are incredible killers on rabbits.

Forgot to say hi!! I know what you mean about your greyhound... they leave a hole the size of Kansas. They're good dogs, but like whippets, they do break. I think these last two of mine are just that, the last two... I think Louisiana and Blueticks are in my future.

the run up is the time/distance it takes for the dog to get to top speed. blowing the turns means that he loses traction making the turns & has to catch up to the game again, this usually happens w/ fox & feral cats. the couple of longer runs he's had on deer they couldn't turn tight enough to make him blow it.

i have heard the salukis are hit or miss. when they hit they are straight killers (like my mutt) but when they miss they'll play w/ the game. A lot of coyote hunters & brit lurchermen are put off by that. the next sighthounds i get will probably be a hotblood for making bullcrosses (for running catchdogs on hog & deer) or a small quick stag for the same purpose. however, i am seriously considering a whippet to team up on deer w/ Sonic (the black dog).

I understand that COMPLETELY! The first week I got my late Greyhound TopGun... he was only 22 mos old and still growing. I had NO clue how quickly a grey could reach that top speed...LOL... I was thinner then, about 98 lbs...I'm tiny. Anyway... I found out while he was on leash when a feral cat came past... and he separated my shoulder Badly. Bent his windpipe that day too... it was a Big ouch. Until about a yr before he died he still had fun with that "run up"... he'd lay in wait for the coonhounds and Whoosh.... catch em quick. LOL. Had to be muzzled for every turn out..... they do have some teeth..... I understand about the turns too.

I guess I am one of the few. I would obey the law and would have a couple of top notch opposum dogs for sale, cheap! I dont like bothering with the law and do my very best to stay clear away from them. Not sayin' I do NOTHIN wrong, just few and far between. If it means givin up something I love, so be it but I wont go down quitely. I would spend that time they took away from me fighting them.
