Get what you like or like what you get.

I see people all the time saying they want this or that in their hound. Do most people get what they like or end up just liking what they get??

For me, it might be some of both. But as long as I enjoy hunting the dog and at the end of the last turnout of the night, I'm pulling it off a tree with a coon in it, the shortcomings in either the hound or myself don't seem all that relevant.

I think it has been a little of both for most of us. When I first started I thought I wanted a track straddelin, take two hours to get treed, bloodhound type dog. Don't ask me why, that's just what I wanted.

Well, I tried that but the dog never turned out. I then got one and it could ever more FLY on a track and I saw what I was missin. Now I GOT to have a speed deamon and I will not be satisfied with one that can't flat move a track.

What I Have

Personally I like what I have but would enjoy having the perfect hound. At the present time I have four hounds that can tree coon just about everytime they are sent alone or with company. I could change something to improve any one of them.

i think most of us hunt what we like,but settle for less than we want.
its so hard to find that complete package all wrapped up in one dog hide.
theve all got holes in them and each one of us are different as to what holes we can live with.

if i like a dog,i will hunt him.
if i dont like him i will find all kinds of excuses not to hunt.
sometimes im not real sure why i dont like the dog,i just dont.

I agree with Elvis. I hunted with a guy recently and his dog barked nonstop in the dog box from the time the truck was started to the time it was turned off. I had my windows up and my radio on and was 1/4 mile behind this fella. I could still hear him barking! This dog is still this fella's pride and joy, but I was ready to throttle the darn dog.LOL

I did explain to the fella that he could correct that if it bothered him. When he asked how, I was more than glad to tell him.LOL

i look for the traits of mommy and daddy but try to go with a bloodline i like. i have had one dog in 10 years i would say was one of best i have owned easy to call great dog to handel .gentle as a kid
nocturnal preacher was his name.

After a life time of

hunting these ol` hounds, I pride myself with owning a few top notch coon dogs, over the years. I believe in hunting the best that I can afford. I have spent all my spare money, and time on coon dogs. The ones that I trained, were pretty much naturals. The trick to training is in recognizing "natural talent" at an early age, so you don`t waste your time on one that just don`t have it. I`ve never seen a dog, or man, that didn`t have some faults, but there are definitely some that are better than others.
