Famous Painting of Washington, Lafayette, and hounds

We love blueticks. We have seen several references to blueticks being derived from hounds that Lafayette gave to George Washington. At one time, I believe I saw a reproduction of a famous painting of Washington (and possibly Lafayette) with some hounds that look somewhat like bluetick ancestors. I have just spent almost two hours googling to try to find that painting, with no success. Does anyone happen to know the details of the painting (e.g. the artist, which museum owns it) and where one can find an image of it online? We would be most grateful.

I hope this is not too off topic. There is not much for a bluetick owner in Southern California to do or talk about.

Jim

If'n'Ya find it.....

..would you post the picture? I think I have seen one... but I forget. I spent many hours researching Washington in Elem. school... cause I'm related to the Custis' and Lees... and THe President kinda comes along with research about Martha Custis Washington
IF I run across any pix in my old art History books I'll scan and post.
When I first got back into coonhunting and researched blueticks I laughed to see that somewhere WAY back in my ancestry someone had hunting hounds and that some of them were BlueDawgs.....

How could THIS be off topic???? CoonHound History!

Good luck in your search! HappyHunting Heather

Use this Search "Grand Bleu Gasconies"

The Grand Bleu is one of the world's largest scenthounds. Only of moderate speed, he is known for his great ability to raise game by his tremendous endurance, his marvelous nose, and a strong and sonorous voice heard at great distance. A reputation as the "coldest nosed" dog is well earned, giving voice long after the "hot" scent has faded. He is built leggy and square, and is aristocratic looking, with no ponderance or heaviness. Many packs remain in France today, and are used on hare, deer and boar.

Many of this breed were brought to America and used in the development of American coon-hound breeds. The Gascony probably first arrived in the late 17th century with French explorers. In 1785, General Lafayette gave seven purebred Grand Bleu Gasconies to General George Washington. Washington was known as a hound fancier and breeder, and he noted in his diary that, in October of that first year, one of the French Gascony bitches gave birth to 15 purebred puppies! He also remarked that their melodious voices were like the bells of Moscow. Gasconies were imported to America in the late 1800s and again during the mid-1900s.

Wow, those are beautiful big dogs. They remind me of my first bluetick, Louie XIV, who was 100 lbs in his prime. Thanks for the link.
