Hounds in the House

Me and my better half are having an argument about keeping a coondog in the house a say it will ruin it she thinks different. Wanted some proffesional opinions.

I will never have a dog in my house. My coondogs are too big, too clumsy, and too destructive to be anywhere near my front door. You can win this argument easily, put the dog in the house for a week and see how she likes it.

But like Briar said, I think he'd destroy the place. As far as ruining them from hunting, I really don't think that would happen.

we keep puppies inside until they r old or BIG enuf to be put outside. it helps with their bonding, socialization and u can correct them on misbehaviors. but when they get 4 months or so they go outside lol. when housebreaking i tie them out for short periods and increase it as time goes by. 95% of the time theres no fuss when tied out and it gets them used to it. Also we place them in the kennel the same way they just get used to it so when its time for them to move outside they are fine.

All of my hounds are raised to be housebroke. When they come in they have a specific place to lay and that is where thay stay. I agree that it builds a companionship and trust bewteen you and your dog. I believe that the more time and attention that you give them when they are young they are more apt to please their owner as well.

I have two

in my Brooklyn NY second floor one bedroom apartment right now. If you put your valuables away and have a sense of humor, there's no problem. It does take some training and I highly recommend you use a crate occasionally.
Some are more amenable to house training than others. I got one almost two years old at Christmas time. He had never been inside before and he is still a little hyperactive indoors, but great fun. He did very little indoor peeing. He did eat a few gloves and is prone to bringing me my hunting boots to give me a hint. : )
Tip: Use a squirt bottle for indoor training. They hate getting misted.

Ive had a couple I let in the house including a 7 month old plott pup I have now. Both of them are extremely well mannered in the house. They arent inside all the time and they seem to like being able to relax without the other dogs around. Both of them prefer to lay on the couch and watch tv most of the time. My rat dog on the other hand is not going to be allowed back in. He does tear the place up. I dont think it would ever hurt them. If they have the desire to go hunting its not going to make any difference where they are the rest of the time. JMO

nothing wrong with it. I've had better luck with girls than boys in the house (the marking territory thing), but the boys do get to come in from time to time. had 2 of the girls in last couple nights, curled up in the bed, no problems.


usually its a guy that says hounds in the house will ruin them - they just dont want the dogs to be spoiled!!!

I don't think it matters if you have them in the house. I think it matters more on how you train and handle the dog. A dog can be "spoiled" or "ruined" wether it is in the house or not. They can be in the house and still know who the master is.

Ours live in. They don't hunt. Our bluedawg is a retired CoonDawg and live in the house with his hunting owners as well. He can be LOUD and you MUST warn people unaccustomed to the voice Unless you don't like em much LOL... Ours are spoiled but that is mostly my husbands fault. They can be very obedient if you train them well. When they are fostered for BNT rescue and no longer hunt they are very good pets if they have the right personality.
I know plenty of hunters who keep theirs in and have no issues with them "losing their hunt". I would only see a problem with conditioning in different weather. Ours are wimps in the cold now... I think that the bluedawg would go right back to the way he was if we took him in the woods and cut him loose even in the COLD. HEAT would be much harder on a house dog if they are used to AC! Other than weather and conditioning... if the dogs can be house trained... Go For It!

Jared, Thanks for sharing the video.. reminded me of my son when he was a baby and crawled all over my old GSDs... and the baby noises... Priceless!

My two best cat dogs spend most of cat season in the house laying in front of the fire.

All my pups are originally housebroke then kicked outside at about 5-6 months old.

Once they start getting the job done well their reward is to come in and spent more time with us. They love it.

They can learn to be obedient dogs in the house. I have never had a problem with them except for an occasion stealing of my spot on the couch.

Jared! That video was priceless!! What a beautiful baby and hound to match. She seems very comfortable around kids. That's the main thing, as long as the hounds are good with the kids, everything else is a piece of cake. But like was said, you have to have a sense of humor. Kids spill things just like hounds. Sometimes I think it's better to put the kids in the kennel and keep the dogs inside. After you get past the chewing stage, and potty training everything else is fun, fun, fun. Thank goodness we got Scrappy during the summer, I always leave the front french doors open, he taught himself. Little Anne has learned from Scrappy. So far, so good!

HAHAHA...thats what I just said last night! i wanted to put Tanner in the kennel and bring the hounds in! He was being a 2 year old brat..lol. Right now he is pulling on my shirt and arm trying to get my attention....heathin!!! At least dogs dont make you watch cartoons all day!!!!

I dion't believe keeping a hound in the house has any effect on it's odds of making a coondog.

I've had a male Blue tick in the house for 6 years now. Aside from the initial housebreaking, you don't know that he is there. All he does is lay in front of the picture window and fart. My two year old climbs all over him, pulls his ears, hits him and he just lays there and takes it,,,, and farts.

It hasn't bothered him in the woods. You would be very surprised to find out how many of the dogs that you see in the books every month, stay in the house.

Did I mention that you might want to watch what feed you use?

Hounds in the house

I know it doesnt have any bearing on how they hunt. I know of at least three Gold Champions (over $10,000 won in the other registry) that have spent alot of time in the house. I like housebreaking them because, it makes it easier when traveling to a big hunt. You dont have to worry about them getting stolen out of the dogbox if they are asleep in the hotel room with you. Plus, I honestly thinks it helps them adapt to the road better because, it seems like they rest alot better and recover quicker.

Although, one year at the Winter Classic a Gr Nite Ch Black and Tan about met his maker when he hiked his leg and pi$$ed on my bed. I guess he knows I am a Walker man. His owner got a good kick out of it.

Mine live in the house, always have always will. They hunt just fine and I run them on lions and bobcats all winter and the cold has never bothered them. I don't have housecats but some of my friends do and the dogs won't bother them. In my opinion it makes them better dogs.

I've got 3 inside and 2 outside. It won't effect the hunting ability at all. The only problem when going hunting is trying to get out the door without a couple. When they see the lighted and tracking collars they go nuts. Luckily I have a understanding woman.
